Fifty Shades of Grey meets fahrenheit 451

You’d think people would learn from history, but then again in order to do that… it would require someone to actually read a book rather than must burn them. While there are more than a few books out there that I think are a waste of good trees, I do not condone the burning of any books… regardless of what fad they represent. While I can understand the frustration this group has for the book they’re trying to burn, it’s not the right answer. All they’re doing is giving people a reason to read the book rather than ignore it.

When the Vatican banned the Di Vinci Code, it resulted in record sales. The more you hate a book, the more other people want to read it to see what the fuss is all about. Buring this book, regardless of how good or bad it is should never give anyone the lisence to burn them. It sets a bad precident and the last thing you want to be is compared to a certain group of Germans who practiced the same thing during the 1930’s.

Just my two cents… take that for what its worth but I happen to believe that burning any book just isn’t cool.

‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Copies To Be Burned By UK Domestic Abuse Charity, Wearside Women In Need

While some are predicting a “Fifty Shades of Grey”-inspired baby boom, one domestic abuse charity is “disgusted” with the erotic trilogy and wants it burned off of bookshelves.

The love (and bondage/dominance/sadomasochism) story between Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey has quickly become the fastest selling paperback of all time and, for many, the key ingredient to spicing up a stale relationship. But according to advocates working for Wearside Women in Need, an anti-domestic abuse charity, the X-rated novels are condoning dangerous behavior, and they’re planning to burn copies of the book in protest, the BBC reports.

“I do not think I can put into words how vile I think this book is and how dangerous I think the idea is that you get a sophisticated but naive, young women and a much richer, abusive older man who beats her up and does some dreadful things to her sexually,” Clare Phillipson of Wearside Women in Need told BBC.

To demonstrate just how opposed the organization is to a story that involves a domineering billionaire spanking and beating a young virgin with a belt, Phillipson has invited supporters to bring copies of “Fifty Shades” to her office to be scorched at a Nov. 5 bonfire.

She told the news outlet that her primary complaint is that services for victims of domestic violence are getting cut, while libraries are “wasting and grossly misusing public to buy a book which says: ‘domestic violence is sexy.'”

Though Wearside Women in Need may be taking the most fiery stance against E.L. James’ racy novels, other detractors have also gone to great lengths to protest it.

Libraries in Wisconsin, Georgia and Florida have all either refused to order the books or have pulled them from shelves, the Associated Press reports.

“It doesn’t suit our community standards,” Cay Hohmeister, director of libraries for Leon County, told the news outlet.

Dr. Drew Pinsky, a physician and TV personality, also recently came out against some of the forceful moments in “Fifty Shades.”

“It does disturb me,” Pinsky told the “Today” Show. “The ‘swept-away’ fantasy is a common fantasy. But…it’s going beyond that into actual violence against women.”

A friend of mine was trying to get me to read that book. I picked it up at the bookstore, read the jacket, and decided that it just wasn’t a book for me. I did not, however, set fire to the book…people in bookstores tend to get unhappy when you do that.

They still have to buy all of the books to burn … so how is putting more money into the pockets of the author doing abused women any good?

As someone with an English degree who actually read the damn things, I can unequivocally say that the books DO NOT promote actual violence against women. It’s actually a very sappy trilogy about love conquering all, with dirty bits thrown in. If anything, it’s ANTI-violence, certainly anti-child abuse. People just have no reading comprehension skills.

I will just be glad when people stop talking about the pile of dross. The longer it is in the news, the more it will be bought.

This seems misguided. I can’t speak to what the book condones; I bought the first one because all my friends did and we wanted to talk about it since everyone else was. I haven’t made it very far into it. It’s just not great writing. But book burning is never the answer. And I’m not sure that BDSM is really the enemy these people wish it was.

this is…just kind of silly. First of all, burning books, as you’ve said, does nothing but increase their readership. Second, the conflating of consensual BDSM with domestic violence is totally ****.
