Chief Justice Rehnquist (1924 – 2005)
And the hits just keep on coming.
Cheif Justice William Rehnquist has passed away. I hate to be the guy who says ‘I told ya so’, but I do specifically remember telling a lot of people last year that if Bush managed to weasel his way back into the Whitehouse, he would get to nominate at least two justices to the supreme court. Once again, another pre-election prophecy comes true. We saw it coming, and still many dumbasses in the red states didn’t think much of it. Now President Dumbass has the chance to nominate two Justices, three if he decides to nominate a current Justice to the role of Chief Justice. If you though that the court was activist before, just wait until monkey boy is finished making his picks, and watch the fireworks go off in the Senate as we’ll see phillabusters like we’ve never, ever seen before.
If the Democrats in the Senate were smart, they would stall, stall and then stall some more until the mid-term elections come up. They should make these appointments the issue, and tell the people that if you want to protect decisions like ‘Roe vs. Wade’ and other contraversal issues from being overturned, then don’t let the Repubs keep the house or the Senate. This is what I am sure the strategy boys are telling the Democrats right now… and if they’re not, they should be fired for not telling them that. This is going to be a hot issue, and one the Democrats can use to fan the fires going into next year’s mid-terms. I am sure this will cause both side to fight hard, cause future cases like the Shavio case we saw earlier this year hang in the balance on whether Bush is allowed to get the nominations he picks get confirmed for a seat with the Supremes.
Now here’s the big question, do Republicans want this to be a mid-term election issue? The answer is a resounding HELL NO! Republicans took a lot of heat earlier this year when they attempted to interfere in the Terry Schavio case and people were disgusted at how far they attempted to pry into what was a private, family affair. Many of those polled said that the Government had gone too far, and didn’t want them prying into their affairs like they had attempted with the Schavio case. This kind of backlash if rehashed during next year’s elections could be very bad for Republicans, but that will be no where near as damaging as what the democrats can do if Bush picks a extremely far right man of faith for the position. The worse the pick is, the better Democrats can use it for firepower to sway the election in their favor. So moneky boy will have to be very cautious with his pick cause if he moves to far to the right, he’ll anger a lot of voters who might be convinced to give the house or more likely the Senate back to the Democrats.
One can only hope that the pathetic response to the Hurricane in the South and how little Repubicans care will be enough to sway some red states to vote the other way this time out. You were all warned last year, and this time I hope people take our words seriously. Unless you want to see an utlra radical Supreme Court with a 5-4 split in favor or Bush and his corporate whores, then I would recommend making the Senate a little more blue in 2006. Unless you want Bush’s first choices making huge decisions on cases like Military Tribunals, Due process for terror suspects, Roe Vs. Wade reversals, and other vitial issues to the nation, I would recommend not giving the Senate back to the Republicans. Take the last year and a half of crap that’s been going on in both the US and Iraq as plenty of reason to give the other side a chance to stick it to the President and not give him an easy ride. Anything less than that, and you get exactly what you have coming to ya.
Just don’t say I didn’t warn ya…
Peter
I just noticed how long your favorites list is. How do you get around to reading all those diaries?

Well ‘weasling in’ seems a bit harsh…I dont think that he or sandra day o’conner considered he might die, and/or planned it, and have been plotting.

Yup, I had a feeling that it would happen too. It scares the crap out of me. I wonder what changes will happen now with a conservative majority in the Supreme Court.
