Bad Movies, Good Shows and Books…
One thing I missed when living on the island for the last ten years was checking out movies with my older brother. He’s a huge movie buff as well, and his massive DVD collection is evidence of that. So now that we live in the same city again, Chris wanted to go out and check out a movie every now and then as long as it was all right with Leah. Last night we got her approval to watch such a movie… and the title to that movie was ‘Ghost Rider’, the comic book movie about a biker that has a flaming skull for a head and judges the guilty. The film starred Nicholas Cage as the main character, Johnny Blaze, and that should have been a red flag. Even though I wanted to get into this one really bad, I just couldn’t. No matter how good the effects were, it couldn’t make up for the horrible writing and even worse over acting and cheesy lines delivered by the cast. This was just flat out ugly, and I’m taking bowling shoe ugly here people. The writing was so bad, I could have sworn this movie was written by George Lucas. While the movie had some cool scenes, it was so cheesy it made Ang Lee’s Hulk look like Oscar material. Yeah, that bad. Chris thought it was all right, but I would compare that movie to getting my wisdom tooth extracted. Avoid at all costs, this is a DVD rental at best…
Besides the movie, everything else seems to be all right for now. The kids are doing all right, but it’d be more fun if the snow would go away soon. I can’t wait for spring so Ethan can go back to the park and I can take the boys on some long walks. As for work, I’ve spent today watching episodes of Stargate Atlantis, right up to the finale of season 3. Was quite the finale that left me dying to see the next episode. Now I’m beat until August/September. Drat. I’ve got a tone of Smallville episodes on the DVR I also have to catch up on as well. That season has been really good as well, especially the Justice League episode. That episode was the best I’ve seen from that show in years. I’ll likely catch up with this show on my next day off.
Speaking of things to catch up on… I’m on page 51 of my Valentine’s Day gift, Rickard Dawkins’ ‘The God Delusion’ and it’s friggin’ fantastic! I’ve taking my time to pace through it cause I want to injest each chapter at a time. I’ll be the first to admit the book is a bit wordy, but it’s a good read and I’ve been using it to pass the time on the bus going to and from work. It’s a 45 min bus ride, so it’s been nice to have with me. I’ve also got another book on the way in as well. I recently purchased a hardcover copy of Frank J. Tripler book titled ‘The Physics of Immortality’ on ebay for only $8 US. It’s an facinating book I’ve been eager in reading. It’s about the phyics of the theory concerning the omega point and the end of the universe… fun stuff! Something to dig into once I finish with Dawkins but not too quickly.
Hope everyone is having a good Saturday, and I’ll see you all tomorrow!
Peter
I totally want to read that Dawkins book. Can I borrow it when you are done?

ok I will allow you to rag on the prequel trilogy, but come on! Original SW! Though the ideas were/are nothing new, he just took it to another level, or galaxy 😉 Also, you gotta love having reading time on a commute!

A movie buff may own a lot of movies, but a true movie fan owns very little, because they only own the good ones

really, the flaming skull didn’t warn you? after seeing the same preview over and over again, I wondered how anyone could go see it! hope you’ve recovered by now with the help of your reading.

I hate that feeling of having wasted 2 hours of your life, so I’m glad the DVR cheered you up. I don’t watch much TV, but I coulda gotten into Stargate Atlantis. I’m still hoping Firefly will come back to life!

Nicholas Cage seems to be making some god awful movies lately. Have you seen Wicker Man? If not, don’t! It was AWFUL! It’s hard to believe he is an Oscar winning actor.

I’m taking Ghost Rider as proof that the superhero genre is nearing its end. I mean, I assume the Spider Man, Batman and Superman franchises will survive a bit longer, but all these B and C-grade flicks are running the genre into the ground in a hurry.
