Answers to the Lyric Game…

After four days, here are the answers to the lyric game. Thanks to all those who made some great guess, and to those who guessed correctly. It was a lot of fun getting a good bit of notes from people who I think have pretty good taste in music. So without further adue, here are the answers with some videos to accompany them when possible…

Peter

1. I know you wanna leave me, but I refuse to let you go

Answer: Ain’t too Proud to Beg (The Temptations)

The Temptations are awesome and this is one of my favorite.

2. Give a little bit, give a little bit of your love to me

Answer: Give a little bit (Supertramp)

I’m a big fan of Supertramp, but I was surprised to see how many other bands have done a cover of this song. For all I know maybe this one is a cover too. Correct me if I’m wrong…

3. See your momma and the candles and the tears and roses

Answer: Lost In This Moment (Big & Rich)

The first of many country songs I have on my MP3 list. I’m not a huge fan of Big & Rich but this is a really good song…

4. It’s a different world than we remember

Answer: Forever (Ivan)

I’m sure almost everyone has never heard of this one. Truth is I couldn’t find a video for it, cause I think only one video was ever released for this album titled ‘The Spell’, that being a song titled “Open Your Eyes” which I decided to put in it’s place below. Ivan is a Canadian artist, formerly the lead singer of a canuck band you might have heard of called “Men Without Hats’. I have this album, it’s pretty good.

5. I look at all the lonely people

Answer: Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles)

From a song no one got to one that everyone got, everyone knew this one.

6. I don’t need to know your secrets

Answer: Round and Round (Frozen Ghost)

Oh yeah, a relic from the 80’s. One of my favorite albums from that decade. I have the entire album, ‘A Nice Place To Visit’ not only on my MP3 list but on CD and LP!

7. When are you gonna come down

Answer: Goodbye Yellowbrick Road (Elton John)

I’m very surprised only one person got this one. Very surprised…

8. It’s not the first time that I’ve had the sense that something’s wrong

Answer: I Don’t Want To Hear Anymore (The Eagles)

This is a new song from last year’s newly released “Long Road Out Of Eden” and is one of the better tracks from the album. This is a fan made video, but the song sounds the best here so I posted this one.

9. Transmission third world war third round

Answer: Guerilla Radio (Rage Against The Machine)

I don’t have much Rage on my list, but the few I have are killer, like this one. Unfortunately all embedding of Rage is disabled by request, so if you want to see the video, you have to click HERE

10. Darling you gotta let me know

Answer: Should I Stay Or Should I Go (The Clash)

How could any music fan not love this song?

11. Like the latest fashion, like a spreading disease

Answer: Come Out And Play (The Offspring)

Very cool song, and I have a lot of Offspring on my list.

12. On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair

Answer: Hotel California (The Eagles)

Everyone got this one too, and it’s no surprise. This one is a true classic. Leah and I saw them in concert last July and they performed this song electric and it was mind blowing amazing. You don’t have to take my word for it… I have the video to prove it! Posted below is the video that we shot in Toronto last year!

13. You say that you’re leaving

Answer: It Hasn’t Hit Me Yet (Blue Rodeo)

I have a lot of Blue Rodeo on my MP3 list, and it’s because their one of my favorite bands. I’m surprised they only came up once on this list… but this is a good one, from the album ‘Five Days In May’. Check it out.

14. I hurt myself today to see if I still feel

Answer: Hurt (Johnny Cash)

Just to be safe people guessed both Nine Inch Nails and Johnny Cash, and while I do have both on my MP3 list… the one that came up during the random suffle was Cash’s version.

15. Why don’t you take another piece of my heart?

Answer: Let Me Live (Queen)

This one stumpted a lot of people who thought this was a Janis Joplin song. But that song starts off, “Take another little piece of my heart now baby” A little different, but very close to toss everyone a curveball.

16. I’ve been around this world, been to a lot of places

Answer: Even If My Heart Would Break (Aaron Neville & Kenny G)

I’ll admit it, I am a fan of Kenny G… but this song is actually on my list because I’m a bigger fan of Aaron Neville. I have a few dozen of his songs, including this one.

17. Pizza party at your house

Answer: A Complicated Song (Weird Al Yankovic)

What would a random list be without Weird Al? I love the fact that one of his songs came up on this shuffle. This parody of Avril Lavigne’s Complicated’ is knee slapping funny too…

18. Play a little kiss and tell with poison pills

Answer: Ocean Pearl (54 40)

Another Canadian band, and another good song by them. I love 54 40, I’ve seen them perform a few times… and would see them again in an instant. Check out this song, it’s pretty hip.

19. Dennis is a meance with his “Anyone for Tennis?”

Answer: Patricia The Stripper (Chris De Burgh)

Most people say that ‘Lady In Red’ is their favorite DeBurgh song, but have to say by far Patricia will always be mine. This song is by far the best written and funniest song De Burgh has in his arsonel. It’s hilarous!

20. The bravest thing I’ve ever done was to runaway and hide

Answer: Break Your Heart (Barenaked Ladies)

Another Canadian band, and this one comes from their first live album called “Rock Spectacle”, and is oneof the better songs from that album.

21. I’ve got too much on my plate

Answer: Ever Present Past (Paul McCartney)

The newest single from Sir Paul. I warn ya, it’s quite a catchy tune…

22. Ground Control to Major Tom

Answer: Space Oddity (David Bowie)

I have a lot of David Bowie on my MP3 list… Zomby would be proud. Good song, but really messed up video. 🙂

23. Do you remember our first dance together?

Answer: Slow Dance (Michael Peterson)

Personally, I am very surprised there wasn’t many country songs on this list, cause I do have quite a selection of country artists on my MP3 list. I guess it was just the luck of the draw. This is one of my favorite Peterson songs because Leah and I got to see Peterson perform it live when we saw him at the Grand Ole Opry in 1999. That was the first time I heard that song, and I’ve been enjoying it ever since.

I apologize, but no video could be found for this song, which is a shame cause it’s a really nice ballad.

24. I sit and wait, does an angel contemplate my fate

Answer: Angels (Robbie Williams)

Great ballad. One of Leah’s favorite songs…

25. Why, you wanna tell me how to live my life?

Can’t believe no one got this one. No Bon Jovi fans out there?

Answer: Have A Nice Day (Bon Jovi)

Have you heard the Ben Harper cover of “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” from the film “Standing in the Shadows of Motown”? If not, I recommend the song and the film – they’re both brilliant!

January 29, 2009

You would love that film. I force my students to watch it every year. Break Your Heart is from Born on a Pirate Ship before Rock Spectacle. And come on, I guessed 15 was Queen! I don’t get any credit for that? 🙂
