My First Day of the Rest of …
the school year! Yes, the long term sub job was made official at 4:09 PM on March 15 when the teacher I’m subbing for had a 10 lb. 3 oz. baby girl!!!! That’s some HUGE baby isn’t it? And even more amazing is that her mom is only about 5′ 5" tall and I bet she only weighed about 110 pounds soaking wet before she got pregnant! Wow! Oh well, better her than me I say! LOL!
So today went well. It was an easy day except that when the head of the department came in to offer her support, and she started asking the kids questions she knew would be on the test tomorrow, a few of them said they hadn’t covered those things. She was nice enough to take time out of her busy schedule to outline on the board what they needed to know but we had a few attitude problems in the class. I shut them down after she left and was pleasantly surprised to find that everyone else was very interested in finding the answers to the general questions. I had a little trouble helping them with that since I am jumping in at the very end, but together we did manage to do it. They even offered to and did write everything on the board for me!
We have two "buffer days" after the test so between the head of the department, who is a wonderful lady by the way, and myself, we can figure out what to do if they have indeed not covered enough to get through the test. I have to say, though, that the teacher I am replacing did an absolutely incredibly thorough job in getting all the lesson plans laid out for me! Unlike the last long term job I had that was sketchily laid out at best and the teacher was off in Viet Nam adopting her baby and had many other things to occupy her mind than answering a few desperate emails from her inexperienced replacement having meltdowns every day! Sheesh! After learning by fire the first time, I figure this should be a cakewalk! LOL!
Besides, I am not trying to teach Honors Science this time with no other teachers supporting me. This time it’s English. I figure at least I understand the language! LOLOL! And this time around, I have had no less than 8, (yes 8!) other English teachers seek me out to offer their support just today! And even the head of the Media Center (that makes 9 lol) offered to help me anytime I needed it. I’m not silly enough to think this really will be a cakewalk, but it sure will be enjoyable:)
I was so relaxed that even when the Media Center called to say the teacher that was going to give a presentation to the 4th period wasn’t in, it didn’t bother me. I just flipped the page to tomorrow’s lesson plan instead. And when she called back to say she came in after all after the class had started, I still didn’t stress. I just shut the book and told everyone to come on.
And after school I wandered down to the ballfield to kiss my honey good-bye, but if it’s this nice out tomorrow, I may just hang out in the stands and do my work there for awhile.
Yes, life is good and wonderful. (This week anyway! LOL!)
Sounds like thinsg are going well for you. It’s so nice that you are enjoying teaching so much. What have the temps been down there? It’s been in the 30 – 40’s here for the pst several days. It’s supoposed to snow, then turn to rain on Wednesday. Par for the course in New England! 🙂 *hugs*
