Stepping On Minecraft
There are movies being made out there that the world can do without. I suppose the same could be said for song covers that have been recorded, that again, the world did not need. This entry won’t be about music though. I’ll save the bad music rant for another entry.
But yes, the world of movies has become a dark and desolate place. I haven’t gone to the movies in a very long time and with the way things are going in Hollywood, I won’t be visiting a movie theater any time soon. I don’t think I’m missing out, that’s for sure.
Believe it or not, I’m not looking to attack Disney in this entry, though I know that if I’m not careful, I’ll end up tossing Disney under that proverbial bus all over again. Disney is still terrible, by the way. I couldn’t resist. I had to take that shot. But it’s so true. Disney fucking sucks.
So, I’ve been a gamer for much of my life. I know that it is not unusual for video games to be adapted into movies. I am also well aware that some of these “video games turned movies” tend to be very “hit or miss”, with the majority of them ending up being quite forgettable. My first inclination is to scoff whenever I hear that a video game is becoming a movie.
This could not have been more accurate than when I first learned that a Minecraft movie was being made. At first, I was of the impression that this had to be a joke. No one asked for this movie to be made. Why would time, resources, and energy be spent on this sort of nonsense? I didn’t get it at the time and even as I write this, I still don’t get why this movie was made.
I normally like Jack Black and the movies that he’s made. I loved Orange County, Shallow Hal, and the entire Kung Fu Panda series. He even voiced the main character in the 2009 video game, “Brutal Legend” for the PlayStation 3. Black voiced Eddie Riggs in that game and from what I remember, that game was halfway decent. I don’t want to say that Black, by himself, is the draw, but sometimes I’m at least willing to listen when I learn that he’s going to be some kind of new movie or video game. When I found out he was going to be in the Minecraft movie, that excitement needle did not move. Not one bit. Just the name “Minecraft” was enough of a turn-off for me that even Jack Black couldn’t save it, nor could he make me even remotely interested in that movie.
I never cared for Minecraft as a video game. I tried to get into it. Truthfully, I did. I bought the game physically for the PlayStation 4. I had even spent a few extra dollars on a strategy guide for the game, thinking this would somehow motivate me to play and possibly even enjoy the game. I devoted way the hell more time to this game than I probably should have and really, I did so for nothing. And in the end, I never got into it. I couldn’t do it. To this day, I still own the game. I still own the strategy guide for it. The time I spent playing it? Yeah, that’s time I’ll never get back.
So, in the end, I don’t care for Minecraft as a video game and I definitely don’t give a rat’s ass that a Minecraft movie was made. This a movie that I can do without.
Speaking of movies, Val Kilmer died almost two weeks ago, on April 1, 2025 to be exact. Sadly, his death was not a joke. He was 65-years old. In 2015, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, though I believe that he actually beat the cancer. Who would have thought that pneumonia would have taken him out? Pneumonia is no joke, that’s for damn sure.
I know that people tend to remember Kilmer for his roles in Top Gun, Tombstone, Batman Forever, and Heat, among many other movies. As for me, the one movie role that I will forever remember Kilmer for would be the one he played in 1984’s Top Secret!, where he played American musician, Nick Rivers. This would be Kilmer’s very first movie and as far as I’m concerned, Kilmer would star in a comedy classic. Top Secret! is a Zucker brothers film, which for me, was all I needed to hear. If you’ve watched “Airplane!” or “The Naked Gun” trilogy, you know exactly what I mean when I drop the Zucker brothers’ name. I wouldn’t watch this movie until sometime in the 1990’s and I definitely was not disappointed.
If you have the means, I would highly encourage you to check it out.
Some movies are classics, that (at least to me) will stand the test of time. Then you have nonsense like Minecraft. Not that this was ever a competition or anything like that, but there is absolutely no way in hell that Minecraft ever trumps “Top Secret!”. That Minecraft movie just can’t compete.
It can’t.
