Sicker Than Your Average

When it comes to music, I’ve always been opinionated.  This is especially true when it comes to rap music.

I happened to stumble across the video above and of all people, I would have never thought that Jo Koy would have brought such knowledge to the world when it comes to music and he’s doing stand-up comedy.  I had no idea that he and I had the same mindset when it comes to rap music of today when compared to rap of yesteryear.  I might have been more eloquent than Koy comes off, but damn, he got the crowd agreeing with him, just as I agreed with him.  Even as I write this, I keep thinking the same thing over and over in my head.

He’s not wrong.

Mumble rap is absolutely garbage.  It just is.  The fact that this genre of rap even has its own title is terrible.  Mumble.  What the hell is that?  If you’re not pronouncing your words, why even bother rhyming?  What’s even more terrible is that people actually listen to this crap, on purpose.

The Notorious B.I.G. died on 03/09/97, nearly 30 years ago.  He may have passed on, but his music lives on today.  Great music has a tendency to transcend time and the era in which it was first released.  Don’t think for a second that Biggie’s music still won’t rock the room or as Koy said, “…it still fuckin’ shuts down the club”.

Now, if you skip to the 3:25 mark, you’ll see the crowd go fucking nuts when The Notorious B.I.G. starts playing.  If there was ever a hip hop classic, “Hypnotize” would easily be one of them.

There aren’t any poets or lyricists in the rap game today.  Apparently, the rap game has taken this horrible downturn to where now mumbling draws crowds and garners attention.  If you have a speech impediment, you may have a future as a mumble rapper.  You don’t even need to know how to talk or pronounce anything you say.  Slur your words.  Do they even have to rhyme?  Maybe not.

Music today, as a whole, is trash.  It just is.  Having grown up in a time when you had artists like Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Anita Baker, and Babyface doing their thing and doing it properly, suffice it to say that years ago, the bar had been set relatively high.

In 2025, music is definitely not what it once was.  Apparently, it doesn’t take much to get a record deal today, because from what I’ve heard of today’s music, you don’t even really need to have a great or even decent singing voice.  I don’t feel like naming names, but rest assured that none of them can hold a candle to the acts of yesterday.  Biggie, rock that shit.

I was very fortunate to have a sibling 7 years older than me who exposed me to the legends of rap music.
