Wet Wednesday

  • Today I did three loads of laundry. I have GOT to have a word with the landlord about that dryer. It took two and a half hours to dry two flannel sheets and two flannel pillowcases.
  • Ever since I bought pads for all the chairs out on the deck, it has been raining…
  • The tomato hasn’t moved anywhere as yet. The objective of moving it yet once again is for it to get more sun. We haven’t seen the sun for three days.
  • Today I got the check for $100 from the insurance company for using the repair shop of their choice for the repairs on my Kia.
  • I have decided that at the age I am now, if I need a nap, I should take one. However, I am making a real effort to not nap longer than an hour because more than that messes up my night’s sleep.
  • Today Fred made a good beef soup with pasta and vegetables.
  • Tomorrow I should probably go get my hair trimmed.

What I am reading:

  • I have found a new-to-me author whose books I am really enjoying. Her name is Nicola Griffith. The first book of hers that I downloaded and read is science fiction and is called Ammonite.  The one I am reading now is called Stay and is ummm, well, not science fiction! What I like about her writing is that she begins in the middle of the story and keeps me wondering but not lost all the way through. In both these books, women are the main characters — in fact Stay is told in first person. Both of these books have protagonists I can relate to and in whom I have a genuine interest. Her third book is The Blue Water. It is waiting for me on my Kindle.
  • I have almost finished The Emancipator’s Wife by Barbara Hambly. It is, as you would expect from the title, a fictionalized account of the life of Mary Todd Lincoln. I don’t know how historically accurate it is since I knew nothing about Mary Todd Lincoln before I read it, but it has made me sufficiently interested in her and her times to go looking for more.

I think that it’s smart to take a little nap every day. I think Latin America and most of Europe has it right taking a nap in the afternoon. It refreshes the mind and the spirit. I hope you have some sunny weather tomorrow. (((Hugs)))

I adore books that start smack-dab in the middle of things.

Did y’all get any storms up your way? I know Rich’s parents were under a Tornado Watch in Delaware.

Mary Todd Lincoln had some mental issues that she had to deal with throughout her life. As she lived in the 19th century, this made things rather tough for her. A few years ago, I read a rather sad story in A Treasury of Great American Scandals (by Michael Farquhar) about how the rest of her life played out after President Lincoln was killed. I can’t remember all of the details, but, if I’m correct, I think one of their sons had her (or tried to have her) committed.

We haven’t seen the sun for days, either. I wanna be warm!!! Sounds like the dryer’s heating element is out. Your landlord certainly isn’t as on the ball as the last one, is he?

I do recall that Mrs. Lincoln was supposedly a barking lunatic, having the distinction of being the craziest first lady.

I need to read more Hambly! I’ve heard that her series set in 19th century New Orleans is supposed to be very good. It was raining and blah today here too.

I made that decision about napping, a few years ago! :o) !! But now I’m working and don’t get my naps, darn it! Speaking of work….I kinda like stormy days cuz then I get off early. Aren’t I awful? I really was NOT wishing the storms on you, though….just on my own state! :o) !! hugs, Weesprite

I hope it stops raining long enough for you to enjoy those new chair pads.:) I put The Know-it-all on hold on your recommendation and I got an e-mail saying that it is waiting for me. I just know that I’m going to love it!

In spite of the 10 books I have going – I started and have nearly finished one recommended by a friend. It was called The Rapure of Canaan. I forget the author. Good read. (I did finish one book on the plane so I’m not above the 10 mark)
