Tutoring

I took my cell phone to the library because I told Fred that since I was going to the doctor’s to pick up his prescription, if Robin wasn’t there at 1 pm, I was going to call her. Fred said, “She’ll be there.” He was right. I got there just as the library opened at 1 pm and she was waiting for me…

The session went fairly well. She asked for help with learning the parts of speech and recognizing them in sentences. At the end of the hour we had worked out a strategy for her to do this on a test .

  1. Since she could find verbs pretty easily, she was to find all the verbs in all the sentences first.
  2. Since she could recognize prepostional phrases quite well, she was to look for those. Once she had found them, she remembered that they always began with a prepositon and ened with a noun or pronoun.
  3. The next thing was to go through each sentence looking for nouns. This proved to be fairly easy since she had limited the number or words she had to consider by having all the verbs and prepositons {and the nouns and pronouns that were objects of the prepositions} already marked.
  4. Next she was to look at each noun or pronoun and decide if it had an adjective modifying it.
  5. The hardest words to identify were adverbs but since most commonly they “add to verbs”, I had her go through each sentence looking at the verb and seeing if it had a modifier. I also told her that about two-thirds of adverbs which modify verbs end in -ly. {I made this statistic up, in case you are wondering where it came from. I wanted to give her a tool to help her find an adverb—and a lot of them do end in -ly!} We then looked at a few adverbs which did not end in -ly.
  6. Finally, I had her look for interjections. These are rare and easy to see. {She had no problems finding the three common conjunctions, either}

After this, I went out to the doctor’s office, picked up the prescription, took it to the drug store and waited for it to be filled. When I got home, Fred told me that Robin {the student I was tutoring} had called. She {Robin} had called her advisor, told the advisor how much I had helped her, and asked if there was enough money to pay me for two hours a week tutoring her. Which, apparently, there is!

It is nice to be appreciated.

Wow! Great method for identifying parts of speech. You’re an awesome tutor!

I wish you had been my teacher back in elementary school. You really explain things in a way that is easy to understand.

It’s wonderful to be paid for your time and effort and I think Robin must appreciate it very much.

How wonderful to be needed like that!

Funny how you felt you needed to quit your job and it just “happened” right before you needed to take care of Fred, and now that Fred is doing so much better, a new source of income just falls into your lap! Isn’t it great how that all works out!

That is great! You sound like a really great teacher. The way I find the preposition is any thing a squirrel can be on,or around. An eighth grade teacher taught me that. I always go back to that silly squirrel. I took an English class in college I passed but I thought I would take it again so that I had it really good. I like parts of speech. I hate math. I love English. I probably am not

Now that all sounded double dutch to me

it sounds like you are a very good tutor. 🙂

Believe it or not diagraming sentences was the part of English I liked the best.

Wow… I need you to teach me those things. I never did have a good english teacher and those kind of things still allude me! Good work!

That’s an awesome thing you’re doing. I’m so happy that she has you to help her out. So many people out there don’t know where to turn for the help they need. You both are truly blessed. Take care.
