Treadmill Woes & Books
I have been trying to get in touch with the movers whose telephone number the clerk in the sporting goods store gave me. Apparently this firm will fetch my treadmill from the store and set it up for me at home for a fee. {I did mention I bought a treadmill on Friday, right?} Well, I called them from the store on Friday and from home on the same day. Then I called them on Saturday and all three times I got their answering machine. The answering machine’s message asked me to leave a message and my name and phone number and that they were thrilled to help me…well, actually not in those words which is just as well since I have had NO callback! So, I will assault their machine verbally on Monday.
I am not very upset by this since I am still in the process of cleaning out the corner of the dining room where I want to put it. But if they are STILL not answering me on Monday, I will go back to the store on Tuesday and ask the people there if they can recommend another mover. If they can’t, I am almost at the point when I will ask for a refund for the treadmill because getting it delivered and set up was one of the things I said I HAD to have on any machine I bought. And they sang the praises of this one particular business… I really liked this machine but I am sure there are others out there that I will like just as much.
Both Fred and I like sleeping in a cold bedroom so for the last week or so, we have turned the heat off at night in the whole apartment. Until this morning, the temperature in the house was around 60 when I got up. This morning it was 38 which is what it is outside right now! We are getting to the time of the year when the thermostat is lowered for the night and our bedroom door is shut. The heater vents in the bedroom are closed and we have a fan blowing over us all year. We DO have a very nice electric blanket, though!
I am reading The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly on my Kindle, but what I HAVE to do is to at least sample The Odyssey by Homer and translated by Robert Fagles. This is the book club choice for this month and the meeting is next Tuesday. {Insert a deep sigh in here} I got this as a used paperback rather than the Kindle edition because I am pretty sure I won’t want to keep it around and thus I can put it in my Freecycle bag. If I find I love it, there are several translations for the Kindle.
Until later…
QUOTATIONS:
"There is only one success – to be able to spend your life in your own way."
Christopher Darlington Morley (1890-1957)
I hope you get your treadmill set up fast. I was very lucky to have Michael come over and set mine up for me when I bought it last year. It’s not super difficult but it’s far to big, bulky and heavy for one person to do it (at least, when that one person is me). I agree if you dn’t hear back from the people on Monday, it’s time to take your business elsewhere.

I love sleeping in cold bedrooms under a pile of blankets! I’m one of those people who must have a fan in her bedroom, even in midwinter. It’s not because I like the coldness; I need the fan for the noise and the air circulation, but it does make my bedroom cold. The Odyssey! One of my favourite books that I read at high school!!!

I cannot stand people who are in business, but are not available to their customers! I don’t understand that at all. I love a cold bedroom, too, but we are turning on our furnace this evening. Our temperatures are similar to yours right now.

38? Wow. Now I admit that when I lived in CT I would shut my bedroom door and leave a windwow cracked open just a bit… But in those days I had a nice warm waterbed~ Nowadays, 55 feels much the same way that did. But that’s not here yet. Today is in the 70’s, no humidity. I’ve been waiting all year for this!!!! Lovely! Good luck with the movers…..Hope they hop to! Love ya~ ~M

Good luck with The Odyssey. I think it is way beyond my reading ability. Or comprehension. Thank you for your note re: Vivian. I did think of you when I heard of her diagnosis. She’s a fighter, too, so that is the right attitude to beat it.

I hope you get the treadmill thing ironed out. How annoying! I’ve bought several books because they are classics and thousands of people have sung their praises, so I felt I “ought” to read them. (Like “East of Eden” and “Hitchiker’s Guide.”) A few I’ve liked, but most of them felt like a chore I just had to slog through. I gave up on both the above novels. I don’t get it, and I don’t WANT to get it. When I’m forced to read such a book for reading circle, I usually go to the library and get it on CD and listen to it while I’m driving around. That way, I get the gist of the story without having to sacrifice any time or effort actually reading it. LOL!

Good luck with setting up the treadmill. I like the apartment cold also, but like choice in the matter. I can no longer have house plants as it gets SO cold here in the winter that they die out. At times the water freezes in the cats’ bowl… and in the toilet bowl also. That is TOO cold!

I hope they are there on Monday so you can give them an earful! I rather liked the Fagle edition of Homer — I still have to wade through the Aeneiad that he’s translated. Very readable and understandable.

We have a fan blowing over us all year, too! And tonight it is only 41 degrees here….wow, so hard to believe we are nearly as chilly as you are up there! :o) !! I hope the moving people call you today. Maybe they just had a three-day weekend for some reason? hugs, Weesprite
