To the Ophthalmologist & Back Again*

Yesterday I went for my first visit to the ophthalmologists’. I did, of course, get lost on the way there  but my GPS recalculated and, eventually got me to the right place. There was a lot of paperwork which I had expected, and indeed, I had a list of my medications on one side of a card and on the back was my new phone number! And nowhere on any form did it ask me when I started menopause!

Dr R. seems like a pretty nice guy and he did exactly what Dr. Y {my previous ophthalmologist} did. Except he only kept me waiting 15 minutes rather than the couple of hours Dr. Y would routinely subject me to. I had several kinds of drops plus the exam that involves a lot of flipping lenses and being asked, "Which is better, A or B?" If you have ever been checked for glasses you know what I mean. The bottom line was that I did not need a new prescription.

Now knowing me, you must remember that these days I can’t go anywhere without some drama, or as I prefer to think about it,  an adventure! While I was sitting waiting, I was trying to remember if I had locked my car doors. It is one of those things that one does without really thinking about it, right? Then I also wondered if I had put the GPS in its case and put it in the glove compartment! So, when I left, I was already concerned about the car when I got off the elevator and left through the big glass doors.

I walked up to where I had left my car and it wasn’t there! At first I thought, well, maybe I left it on the top end of the parking lot so I went to see. Nope! About now I was getting pretty panicky. I have no cell phone {Thank you Virgin Mobile <acute sarcasm>} so wondered how I could get help. Then a bit of common sense surfaced and I walked back up to the top of the parking area pressing that button that makes your card go "Barp! Barp! Barp!" Nothing happened. So then I walked down the parking lot doing the same thing…and there it was, yelling at me. BUT! It was on the other side of the building. Immediately I knew what I had done. I hadn’t noticed that there were TWO big glass doors, one on each side of the foyer downstairs and I had come out of the wrong door! However,  I HAD put the GPS away but not locked the doors!

Now, you remember I said I had lots of drops in my eyes? One of them was the one that dilates the pupil so now, although it was wearing off, I had to drive home unable to see the GPS clearly! Fortunately, it talks to me! It was somewhat stressful because although my glasses do darken in the sun, I was in a car rather than out in the sun. The thought did occur to me that if I had an accident, would the police think I was on drugs? Of course, this all ended happily and I got home safely! I was actually physically exhausted and my eyes were grainy and a bit sore from all the drops I had had.

The evening finished on a good note since I had an entirely unexpected visit from Jake on his way home from work!

I love that you prefer to think of mishaps as adventures! They really are, aren’t they? If everything went just perfectly every time, we wouldn’t have nearly as good stories to tell about them! :o) !! I’m glad this doctor doesn’t make you wait for hours….and very glad you found your car! hugs, Nicky

Oh, looking for your car in the wrong spot is something I would surely do!!! So glad you found it and that your GPS was in the glove compartment!! Hugs,M

What you call drama or an adventure, I call stupid stuff. I hate doing stupid stuff when my sons are around b/c I don’t like them to see the stupid things I do. I did one at the airport the other day when my son was sitting with my while I ate breakfast. I told him I hate doing stupid stuff when you and Jeff see me. He just laughed. I’m glad you made it there and back and your eyes are ok. Somehow all that checking and choosing A or B and the drops are tiring. I almost dread going to the eye Dr. Glad Jake dropped by.

Having your eyes dilated is weird. The last time I had it done, everything looked like it was in a fog. Happy you made it home without incident!

You certainly did have a lot of drama connected to your visit to the eye doctor! You are fortunate not to need a new prescription. My eyes are so bad, I hate the eye exam where you have to keep saying whether “A” or “B” is better. I always feel like I’m failing a test when I can’t read the eye chart — as if, if I really tried harder, I would be able to!

OH…that IS an adventure. I think we have all misplaced our cars at some point:)

I think you did well to keep your composure while you looked for your car.

I have the darkening-in-the-sun glasses too. 🙂

I agree that it’s admirable of you to stay calm under trying circumstances.

RYN: Yep, she’s 6. I think she’s quite the little artist, she gets it from her dad. Stick figures are about the extent of my artist ability :/ For Trev’s tattoo I kissed a piece of paper and the tattoo artist used that to make an outline.
