Thursday Activities

Today I went up to school to read with Nick. We have only one more day to read and the Thursday after that will be a pizza lunch for reading mentors and students. He read his book to me for half the time and I continued with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. There is a point in this story when three of the four children discover that one is missing because he sneaked out. Now, we, the readers, understood quite clearly that Edmund had  sneaked off to meet the White Witch, the villain in this story. So, I said to Nick, “What do you think Peter and the girls will do ?” He said, “I know what I would do!” It was fairly drastic involving locking Edmund up in the wardrobe!  When the next sentence made it clear that Peter thought they should organize a search party to find Edmund because they were brothers, Nick said thoughtfully, “I am an only child…”

He is beginning to ask me what words mean now. I ask him a lot because I am, after all, a teacher, although a retired teacher, but today he asked me what a portcullis was. Fortunately that was an easy one to explain by a quick drawing. He also asked me today if I was going to be a reading mentor next year. I said, “I certainly am! Are you planning on being in the program? ” He said he was and asked if I would be his mentor next year. I told him I was delighted to say yes I would!

After I got home, Fred and I decided to go to Costco’s, a warehouse store. I needed some calcium and vitamin D  pills especially since the visit to the doctor had reminded me that I was a borderline case for osteoporosis. The last time we were there, Fred was talking to a young man who had bought a big bag of yeast and so we were looking for some today. I finally went to the desk up front  and asked if it was in stock. The woman looked at her computer and told me it was on aisle 114. Eventually, I found it on aisle 118! I got some fish oil capsules  with my calcium pills and we also got a couple of books. We went home and I carried the stuff up the stairs while Fred went back to close up the back of his car. While he was out there, he started to turn and his knee went out and he fell on the road. I had no idea anything had happened until a young man who happened to be passing brought him in.  He was fortunate not to be badly hurt. He did scrape his knees and cut himself under the eye. {If he has a black eye tomorrow, I am going to tell everyone I beat him up! }  Anyway, he was feeling well enough this evening to go out to the grocery store  and he just got back with goodies like juicy oranges…

Tomorrow I tutor Robin in the morning and go to my art class in the afternoon.

I just took a loaf of white bread out of the bread machine.

Until later…

Oh no! Poor Fred!!!!! Glad he’s not seriously injured… How lucky Nick is to have you, and I suspect, you him, as well! Love to you! ~M

I love that very touching accounting of your tutoring session with Nick. When he said he was an only child it got to me. Both of my grandkids are only children. Mark is so much younger than his sisters that he is like an only child. There is sometimes something very lonely about that I imagine, even though they are all well adjusted.

I’m so sorry that Fred had a fall, but amazed that he recovered so quickly. That homemade bread must have medicinal qualities!

It’s always so enjoyable to read about your mentoring sessions with Nick. It’s great that he’s looking forward to having you read with him again next year! Gosh, poor Fred! The only good thing that came from that mishap was the delight he’ll take in folks hearing that you beat him up! 🙂 hugs, Weesprite
