Thursday

I walked down to the Senior Center a few minutes ago and was lucky enough to meet the young man who teaches the art class I am interested in taking. It seems like a very basic class in pencil, charcoal, oil pastels and pastels all of which I have had some experience with, but  I have no problem in going back to the beginnings and being reminded again of the basics. So, I signed up and it starts tomorrow from 1 until 3 pm. What I need is motivation and I think this class will give it to me. He provides the materials we use in class but he says that although it isn’t required, most people want a materials list so they can practice what they have learned at home and that many people bring what they are working on  at home into class for help with it. It sounds exactly what I need. I am very excited about this.

I also talked to the man in charge of the center about their computers. Right now they have very old computers and no Internet access but they are getting a big grant in May for new computers and Internet access. I told him that I would be happy to teach a basic how to use a computer class if anyone was interested. I watched our tech person at the library do this with seniors and at the time I thought I could do that. Basically it was how to turn the computer  on and off {yes, really!} , setting up oneself with an email address and finding information using Google .

I also paid them my $5 a year for membership in the Senior Center because their list of activities looks pretty interesting. They have, for example, an exercise class every Tuesday and Thursday. Now, of course, I don’t know if this would be of any use to me but I will go next Tueday to find out. I could have stayed today to find out but I chose to go for a short walk instead. {The rest of my walk will be walking uphill to the school to read with Nick, my fourth grader.}

Fred has his third, and final doctor visit today with his primary doctor, the woman who co-ordinates information from all the other doctors. She wanted to see him after he had seen the kidney doctor so that she could go over all the medications he is taking.

I have just remembered that I need to call Robin and change the time of our meeting tomorrow. It is supposed to be at 1 but that is when the art class starts. So, I will offer her either 10 am or 4 pm. And, since I have promised her a loaf of home-made bread, I had better do that this afternoon after I come back from the reading with Nick.

Until later…

That $5 sounds like a bargain – and well spent. I’m jealous of the art class – would love that I think.

Oh, that’s exciting! I’d love to see your work. You’re going to have a blast. One thing, though (we just had a safety talk about health hazards in the arts, yesterday!) be careful about inhaling the dusts you are working with, and also of getting charcoal on your hands. Possibly consider gloves while you’re working, and even though it makes transportation easier, don’t use spray fixatif!!

I think that stuff is the most toxic thing imaginable. And it off-gasses for months, making it dangerous even in a spray booth (unless you leave it in the spray booth for all of the time that it off-gasses, which is unlikely). Safety talks like that scare me, can you tell? 😉

Your art class sounds wonderful, Patricia. Oh my – I just read the note about charcoal and fixatif. I used to blend charcoal with my fingers.
