The Visit

The high point of yesterday was the visit from my younger son and his girlfriend, the ODer VeronicaCorningstone {VC}. Now, as I have mentioned before, VC and I were OD friends long before she and my son became attached to each other so it was really interesting to meet her in Real Life!

They arrived exactly at 1 pm which is when they had said they would which was amazing because it was eight years since J., my son, had been here and I felt he would have to call us to find out where the house was! But, he said that he recognized the landmarks from when he had driven here with me when I moved in! {I am ALWAYS surprised when my kids show what excellent navigators they both are because that is a gene they DEFINITELY didn’t receive from me! }

The first thing I noticed was how tall J. is! Of course, I knew he was tall {he is either 6 ft 6 in or 6 ft 8 in—I can never remember which} but that didn’t mitigate the surprise at having to look up and then up some more! {I am 5 ft 9– no tiny woman!} The next surprise was that VC is taller than me! Now, again, I was sort of aware that she was tall having seen pictures, but to actually see this was a small shock! They are a tall couple who look very good together!

We had a lovely visit and after a slight feeling of awkwardness on my part at the beginning, I really enjoyed her very much. I knew what she looked like through photographs {and because I had done a pastel portrait of them both from photographs} but before they left, Fred told her that she was much prettier than her photographs and this is true. We talked about this after they left and decided it was because she is one of those people whose face becomes animated when she speaks or laughs and, of course, that doesn’t show up on photographs. I am always delighted to meet people like this. They are the kind of people who seem to have a glow, a power of attraction, that cause others to be drawn to them and VC is one of them! {Are you blushing , K.? It is all true! } And, in addition, she is funny and clever and my son loves her, so what’s not to like! I was very sorry to see them go but they had a long drive back to VC’s parents’ house and thence to their own house. My poor son has to be back at work on Monday.

After they left, I went to bed for a two-hour nap {I had walked outside twice that morning} and then Fred went to get take-out Chinese food from a local restaurant we enjoy visiting.

All in all, a lovely day and an excellent visit, I feel!
