The Mac Book
Well, the Mac Book. Why haven’t I delineated in detail in my usual fashion all my thoughts about buying it ? Well, actually, the bottom line is that it is a not-cheap article and because it is something I wanted but didn’t need.
You know, it took me quite a while to think this out. I probably would’t have ever written this entry if pbreader hadn’t asked me why! {So, thank you, N! } So, this is how the process went.
I was in our local Mac store a couple of times first getting my IPod battery replaced and secondly getting a cover with a clip for said IPod. Both times I {of course} looked at the computers and the second time I had a nice young lady named Katie show me the details of the Mac Book. Now, I knew I wanted a smaller laptop to take with me on my travels. The one I have, a Sony Vaio, is much too heavy to take anywhere. I bought it back when I wanted a laptop to use in different parts of the house. At that time, my eyes were bad and it does have a lovely crisp, sharp screen. {And now, thanks to cataract removals and lens implants, my eyesight is the best it has been in my whole life.} But, the Soney computer is heavy. So, I was kind of in the market for a lighter one. But why a Mac? Well, as regular readers know, I thrive on learning new things. Yes, I could have bought another PC–in fact I have a friend who has a Sony so small that he carries it in a zip-up book cover–but I thought it might be interesting to try a Mac.
There are two other reasons I didn’t discuss the process. First, I wasn’t sure I was going to keep it. If it couldn’t be attached to my network, I was prepared to take it back. And, as it happened, I found *I* couldn’t attach it because I didn’t understand the Mac terminology. But I paid someone to come over and do it and now I have a reasonably good idea of what to do if there is ever a next time this has to be done.
The second reason was a quite surprisingly large blob of guilt about spending money on myself. Yes, you read that right. Spending MY money on MYself. I have actually worked quite hard on getting rid of this feeling left over from the days when I was a single parent and lived paycheck to paycheck. I seldom spent money on myself back them because I was at the bottom of the priority list. I had rent, food, gas and a teenager who literally grew out of his clothes every three months from 14 onwards! And, of course, I didn’t grudge him anything he needed because when you are a parent, your children’s needs {not necessarily wants!} DO come first and that is the way it has to be. These days I am not rich. But since I share the cost of rent and food with Fred, I have money left to spend on myself.
And finally, part of this discomfort about spending still more money on myself is that I have actually spent quite a lot recently. The tuition and the cost of staying with an Italian host for six weeks is not cheap. {The money for my ticket to Italy was given to me by my sister before she died so, although I have not yet bought the ticket, it is actually "paid" for.}
So, there you have it.
QUOTATIONS FOR THIS MONTH: "There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so."

“Every life form seems to strive to its maximum except human beings. How tall will a tree grow? As tall as it possibly can. Human beings, on the other hand, have been given the dignity of choice. You can choose to be all or you can choose to be less. Why not stretch up to the full measure of the challenge and see what all you can do?” Jim Rohn (motivational speaker/philosopher)

I’m pretty sure my son the computer professional (who has always worked with PCs) would get one of those Mac Books if he could afford his own laptop. He’s mentioned it before.

My hubby is a computer programmer and he said the next computer he buys will be a Mac. He hates windows. The only thing I fear is learning a whole new system, but most computers are user friendly.

You’re welcome, Patricia. 🙂 And thank you! I found this very interesting. I see the library/cafe patrons coming in with their notebook computers and they are invariably Macs with the apple icon on the back of the screen. It seems to be the carry-about of choice for many people. And I’ve heard them talking and saying how great it is. Daughter Jo is a Mac user from way back and she says that the Mac is more “intuitive” than a PC. But her sister Meg says That’s ridiculous. A PC is just as easy to operate.” Well, Meg has given Jo a PC because there was something she needed to do that a Mac couldn’t handle (forget what). So now she has both – and so do you. It’ll be interesting for me to read how you get along with your Mac. I do think you will like a Mac for graphics applications. According to Jo who is a graphic artist Mac is best for that. (Photoshop and all those programs.) Let me know.

P.S. I’ll have to experiment and find out how to make a hot link as you’ve done, e.g. the one to my diary. I can make a link but what shows up is a url, not the name of the site or other words of my choosing. That’s so cool the way you did that.

I think it is a engrained thing being a mother that spending money on yourself is bad. You deserve the book.
