Starting the Summer

I have a sore throat. Well, it is not exactly my throat but the left node in my neck. It only hurts when I swallow! {Well, then, stop swallowing! } I have been able to keep the hurt down to a dull ache with OTC painkillers and I have no temperature. I kept waking last night for various reasons* so I took a nice little nap a while ago which I hope doesn’t mess up my night’s sleep.

I need to make a couple of phone calls on Monday. First I must set up the physical therapy for my hip again. I had to cancel it when I fell and damaged my wrist. Secondly, I must call and cancel my next appointment at the orthopedists. When he put the removable brace on, he told me that if I had no pain and was doing daily stuff without the brace and if I felt comfortable about it, it would be fine to cancel the appointment. He said he made it so that if I felt I had any problems, I could get back to see him in June without making another appointment which I thought was very nice of him. I have no bruising and only the occasional tiny twinge of pain so I will cancel.

A couple of days ago, I planted a tomato plant in the same pot that I used last year, and, with some effort, I must admit, dragged the pot to the same area where it gets a lot of sun all day. I started by picking it up and holding against me . This caused it to vent water all down the right leg of my jeans!    So, then I put it back on the ground and pulled it over to the sun spot and that is where it is right now. Possibly on Monday, and if not on Tuesday, I am off to buy flowers for the boxes that sit on the deck. Last year I bought marigolds to put in the hanging baskets which wasn’t too successful. I bought them because I loved the color but not only are they not hanging-basket flowers {because they grow straight up and don’t hang } but they have a slightly unpleasant smell, I think. I have put the purple and pink impatiens in the half barrel where the chives are blooming and they look nice together. I will take a photograph in a day or two.

This morning I sat outside and read for a while which was nice as long as there was sun. When the sun disappeared, there was a chilly little breeze which drove me inside.

* one of which is Fred who is determined to sleep on my side of the bed!

No, marigolds don’t smell good at all, but they’re wonderful for borders in vegetable gardens because they keep away the pests. I’ve been trying to start some kitchen herbs for cooking myself, not quite trusting my less than green thumb. That current plague of the sore throat is a nasty one — I caught J’s when he came back from OKC, and am throughly miserable about it. Hope you get feeling bettersoon.

I’m a lover of the impatients and will buy myself some this afternoon 😉

I guess I’m an oddity, because I like the earthy smell of marigolds.

I always liked the smell of marigolds, but I’m just weird. Petunias make good hanging-basket flowers.

I have heard that about maigolds keeping pests away, too. For that, they should be commended. LOL. I have a sore throat, too, but mine is actually down in my throat. I think mine is allergy related. I hope you feel better soon! (((Hugs)))

Yup, marigolds drive off mosquitos, gnats, fruit flys and midges, who, apparently agree with you about the smell. verbenia (Sweet William here) makes a nice, no fuss hanging basket, if the spot is sunny. Beware the throat thing. I’m in the third week of it -caught it at G-daughter’s graduation.

My mum puts the marigolds with the tomatoes because the smell keeps the bugs away.:)

I didn’t know that Marigolds’ smell keep bugs away. Hope you get better soon

I like marigolds, but lots of flowers smell decidedly better! Some marigolds grow quite tall….it’s a good thing you didn’t select the really tall ones for your hanging baskets! :o) !! I had to laugh about Fred sleeping on your side of the bed. Some nights that is why I get up, too…. and the second I do, Joe sprawls out to cover the entire bed! Yet he insists he likes the double bed we haveand does NOT want a king-sized! hugs, Nicky

My tomatoes last year were wonderful, but this year they just won’t grow, and in fact are turning yellow and dying. They’re about a foot tall. It’s probably too late to start new seeds now in Georgia. I’m not sure if last year’s soil isn’t any good anymore, or if we’ve gotten too much rain…. My green bean plants, however, are growing nicely and are ready to be staked soon. I didn’t realize chives flower. They must be hardy to make it through the winter there. Perhaps I’ll plant some of those, too.
