Snow, Sleeplessness & Birdfeeders
- I got up this morning to find more fresh snow! But it wasn’t calamitously deep. There was just enough to cover the deck so we can see the footprints of the kitty next door! She always crosses our deck on her way to wherever it is she is going and I would imagine she was quite taken aback to find the huge piles that were there. Anyway, we had sunshine even though the temperature has been around 34 most of the day so the new snow has gone,
- I am going through a period where I am finding it difficult to fall asleep again. This time it isn’t a good book keeping me awake but just the difficulty I have shutting up my ever-chattering brain. I find myself going over times and events where things did not go well for me and that is ridiculous because I can’t go back and make changes! Anyway, I would try to sleep and then turn on the light and read for a while, turn off the light and try to sleep… I fell eventually asleep pretty close to 4 am and was up around 8:30. This afternoon I lay on the bed to read as I do most afternoons and fell asleep. It was only for an hour but it was a very deep sleep. in fact I slept right through a phone call which I have never done before! I felt very groggy and miserable when I got up but I decided eventually that this was partly because I had no lunch. I don’t do well when I miss meals. Anyway, I feel considerably better now I have had the evening meal. And a small glass of wine-and-water has helped too!
- I think I mentioned that I got both window bird feeders filled? Anyway, one chickadee found the one on the art room window today. The one on Fred’s window had a seed dump. The feeding tray fell off and dumped about a cup of seed on what remains of the snow. Tomorrow I will bring the feeder in, give it a good cleaning, snap the tray back on, fill it up and put it out again.
- List for tomorrow:
- get my camera working. The charged battery is on the desk right now.
- Find a place to put up five paintings. I have one big one and four smaller ones. I am pretty sure I know where they are going to be.
- Take pictures of these pictures.

I have “brain chatter” too. I call it the “noise in my head” where I rehash every time and event that connects to whatever thing I’m going through at the moment. I hate taking pharmaceuticals, but Xanax really seems to quiet down the noise. It also makes me sleep, so I have to take it at night. I’m hoping to find a “natural” substance that will do the same thing. Hence the SAMe. I was watching a show on PBS on “The Amen Solution,” and he listed a different substance for what I’m going through, but I didn’t write it down. I think I’ll get his book from the library and see what he has to say.

More snow there??? My brain won’t shut up when I’m trying to go to sleep ever. I drown it out with music headphones in my ears as I’m falling asleep. That actually helps a lot.

I’m sure glad the snow melted the same day that it came….since today is, after all, officially springtime! :o) !! And I hope you begin being able to fall asleep more easily again soon. And I also look forward to seeing pictures of your pictures! hugs, Nicky

I struggled to sleep last night too – though in my case it was noisy neighbours.

I have a mental “exercise” I use when I can’t get to sleep. I “go through” my house in my head. “Looking” at things in each room, opening and closing cabinets and drawers…”seeing” myself in mirrors. The concentration of it puts me to sleep. I guess it’s a form of self hynosis…but it works. Sometimes I do it and visualize a road a traveled every day… That works too!!! Loves to you! ~M

There are nights when my brain will just not shut up. Very vexing it is too! I finally spotted some new growth on the azaleas by the front stairs. Still no forsythia yet…

I used to wake up during the night and lie there stewing about everything. Now I have a sleep machine and I listen to the rhythm of it, often counting along. (I also have to lie on my side; if I stay on my back I can’t go to sleep!) Finally, I think taking 25 mg. of Diphenhydramine at bedtime helps me go back to sleep when I do wake up. I want to see your pictures too!!

Do you have a website that has your paintings? I think at one time you did? My dad has a bird feeder that he hangs from a tree and also just a little flat one you set on the ground. The other day we came home and my cat was out there eating the bird seed! Poor kitty, I really should have filled her food bowl before going out that day LOL. I’m usually pretty good about that.
