Saturday Morning

Much to my surprise, Fred asked me this morning about having a diary here. I don’t know why I am surprised. He is an articulate man who enjoys writing down his thoughts. If he ever wants me to, I will provide a link here but I think he is starting by making his diary private. I told him that if he found he was hooked, I would buy him a subscription to ODPlus for his birthday in July.

I am making a two-cheese loaf this morning. It should be good  and nutritious {not to mention high calorie!} with bread flour, wheat flour, honey and both Cheddar and Parmesan cheese in it. The sunflower and sesame-seed loaf I made last time was Ok but it won’t get made again. It tasted all right and it made reasonably good toast but it was nothing special. So far our two favorites {this means I make one of these every three days or so} are the white bread that is made on the French bread setting and thus has a very crisp crust and the brown bread made with just a little molasses. I am glad to have another recipe besides gingerbread to use up the molasses! I really don’t like anything to be very sweet so usually I don’t use honey. If this loaf turns out too sweet, I will try again with sugar {and maybe cutting it down a bit} before I give up on this recipe entirely because we both like the idea of cheesy bread. This is what I did with the brown bread which, I think, called for one-third of a cup of molasses. How I make it now is with one-eight of a cup–enough to give it a hint of sweetness but not so much that we taste the molasses.

Taking this art class has me thinking of my next drawing. We don’t have to do homework but he did give us an extra sheet of paper and remarked that he would be interested to see what we produce with pencils on our own. {I would say that could be called a good “hint! hint! nudge-nudge!”, right? } I am looking at an interestingly serendipitous stack I have on the table right now. The bottom is my camera box and then there are a couple of paperback books of different thicknesses and a manilla folder on top of that. With an addition or two on the sides, this should be an interesting composition to try.

It is 42 degrees and was raining earlier when I went to take some trash out. Once the bread machine has got to the “punch-down” stage, I will take the paddle out and then go for a walk…

Until later…

Mmmm, the bread sounds good. My mom used to make homemade bread all the time before she went back to work…ahh how I miss her dill bread. Much Love, Katie

: ) good luck to Fred, and the bread sounds really good! *huggs*

I don’t mean to be disrespectful, but why are you making that bread? Isn’t it counterproductive? With Weight Watchers I find it hard to ever fathom eating mayonnaise or cheese of any kind again. We froth at the mouth here, trying to find good dinners to eat that aren’t necessarily sushi. I have a lot of the WW cookbooks. I wonder what your thoughts are. Look how much weight you have lost.

RYN No, I am not surprised that you are making bread. lol Did I read back somewhere that you were getting a bread recipe book?? Is the brown bread the one I use? I think it could use less molasses but I just haven’t bothered to cut down on it yet. We Nova Scotians love our molasses. I use some in my baked beans. And of course there is molasses cookies. Then there is the little molasses jug wh

which comes out when we eat tea biscuits. That would fill in for lack of another dessert. Am intersted to see you are taking a sketching course. I have thought of doing that but have not taken the plunge yet. Not sure I have much artistic talent in me. Could I learn or is it inborn? Do share any bread recipe you particularly love. Your apartment must smell heavenly with all the baking.

One further note or question, actually. Is the molasses you get the very dark kind (blackstrap)? Our molasses is lighter here. My friend takes our molasses to her daughter who lives in the US.

that’s interesting that Fred would like to write here…. Too cool. And yes… hooked is the appropriate thing. I tried to move to other places, but I always stayed here too… its too addicting, plus the friends you make. 🙂 RYN: Thanks for that loaf recipe. I will certainly try that! It sounds sooooo good!
