Saturday

I got back from the tuition session with Robin this morning and all I wanted to do was to sit down. This was mostly due to the fact that I had decided to walk up four flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator up to Robin’s apartment. {I usually walk down the stairs.} Fred had been in bed when I had left so when I came in, he asked me if I had been for my walk because he knows I have been trying to get out early in the day while I still have some energy. Unfortunately, this morning I had slept a bit later than I usually do and I had not got my walk in. So, I ate a little something and because he reminded me, I went out for a walk. It was very enjoyable. The temperature was in the high 30’s and the sun was shining. I did the whole mile-and-a-half in 30 minutes which means I did it at 3 mph which isn’t bad.

Next I came home, did the dishes {which I usually do first thing in the morning before the early walk} then put the ingredients in the breadmaker for a two pound white loaf. {Those  of you who follow my breadmaking adventure may be interested to know that this one did rise and I followed the recipe as to measurements since this is the first time I have made this particular recipe.} Then I went online to explore what I could find  in the area of flour containers. I finished up at the King Arthur Flour site where I purchased three plastic containers  for flour which are made of food-safe plastic. This is something I particularly wanted since I didn’t want to put the bag with the flour in the container but just the flour.

I buy King Arthur bread flour–usually two five-pound bags at a time. I envisioned one holding the spare bag, one holding the flour from the opened bag and one for the white whole-wheat flour I already have. Since most wheat-bread recipes I have tried call for one cup of wheat flour and two cups of white flour, and I have only made wheat bread twice, it will take me a while to use up what I have. I was really pleased to have a spare bag of bread flour the other day because I accidentally forgot to check that the cover of the present flour container was snapped down tightly, and the next time I came to use it, there were little mice footprints in the flour! {These are very old containers that Fred had for ten years before I moved in!} Of course, it all went into the trash immediately! Anyway, while I was exploring the King Arthur site, I found a sample box of all the loaf flavorings they sell so I ordered that too. One, I remember, was called something like Apple and Spice. These are added to a basic white loaf and one can get six to eight loaves out of each sample because only a little is used. They come, it said, with recipes. The only bad thing about ordering from these people is that they are in Vermont which means I have to pay sales tax.

I did manage to get in another walk this afternoon but those four flights of stairs really made my butt muscles hurt so I cut this second walk down to 20 minutes. Now I am vegging out in front of my computer and soon I shall be vegging out on the bed with my laptop watching "Grease" which I recently bought on Ebay and/or "Amadeus" which is my current Netflix DVD.

Until later…

DO you do mail-order for the King Arthur flour? Or can you get it there? It’s really hard to find here, and a friend of mine always mail-ordered it (which seemed expensive, for shipping) Hooray for all your activity.

you didn’t need to walk this morning if you walked up 4 flights of stairs. You amaze me.

I’m happy to see you so committed to your walking. You go girl! Have you tried making flax bread yet? Oh, and Curves wasn’t open when I got there so I wrote down their hours and will go back another day.

RYN – Thanks for dropping by. One of my favorite colleagues here in the community college in Las Vegas is a woman from Vermont (named Robin Grenz). So I am favorably disposed toward Vermont teachers. Also, OD opinion is unanimous that I should allow the student to do as she asked. And since OD opinion is unanimous, that actually WILL influence my decision – which I wouldn’t have expected.

I sooooo much want a breadmaker!!! AS for your walking, with eating so much bread I can understand the need…LOL huggles and smiles

I stalk your diary a lot. You look great in that front page diary photo. Why don’t you put on a dress? Something about you is begging for a dress, in the most positive way. It’s springtime, new beginnings, etc. Well, I thought I would send you this before you put me on block.

Congratulations on making it up four flights of stairs. I love KingArthurFlour — they have the best prices on the good vanilla (I splurged and bought a huge container of it), and their flours simply can not be beat. And then there’s all the kitchen gadgets they have… Try for the Click-Clacks, they really are wonderful for those of us with painful hands.

Your house must smell delicious from the baking bread. I never used my bread maker so gave it away. Now after reading your entry I wish I had it.

ryn: I’ll be soooo happy to be a full-fledged Crone myself….and am glad I am one who looks forward to growing older “with grace and dignity.” Oh, I love both movies you got this time. The kids and I have watched “Grease” a zillion times, and “Amadeus” too, ’til I lost our video of it! We must get a new copy; it’s wonderful. Hope you have a lovely day! hugs,
