Morning Entry

This morning while I was making wheat bread, I discovered something. The recipe called for first oil and then molasses. They are both measured out in tablespoons and without thinking I used the same measuring spoon for both. To my surprise and pleasure, I didn’t have to stand there wating patiently for the measured amount of molasses to drip-drip-drip off the measuring spoon! Whoosh! it was gone! This is something I will remember when next I make gingerbread which uses molasses also. {I won’t make gingerbread until the weather gets cooler. We try very hard not to use the oven during the summer.}

Another thing I discovered is that the pedomer doesn’t count steps if one doesn’t have it on! I did a good walk this morning–a mile and a half using the faster music but I will have to estimate the number of steps because the pedometer was sitting at home on my desk.

I was planning on going to the mall to get my hair cut but I have lost the impetus. Maybe tomorrow…

Number of Steps on the pedometer for yesterday: 3348

Only one walk and that was cut short  because it was too hot…

lol I noticed that too!!!! I was worried about the molasses taking forever, but with the oil in the tablespoon it came right out! I’ve got cinnamon raisin bread baking right now…2nd loaf of bread this week! You must be rubbing off on me 🙂

I remember reading that anytime you measure a sticky liquid like that you should spray the measuring device with nonstick spray, so that makes sense!

It is those little things like slippery molasses that can improve our lives.

Question for you: Where do you put your pedometer while you are walking?

August 11, 2005

Those pesky pedometers! They need to make ’em more efficient. I always figured about 2000 steps per mile.

molasses always makes me think of my university honours project… but that’s a whole story to itself. lol

The weather is still beastly here. Gingerbread sounds good though; I am really looking forward to autumn because then I will be able to bake again.

Congrats on the weight loss, and more important, on maintaining it! ryn.. come on in, anyone with an iPod can’t be all bad! But may I ask why?

I have heard that works for spray Pam or spray can oil in any measuring cups. If you are using Corn syrup or honey or something sticky like that.

good tip re: molasses AND the pedometer. 🙂

I discovered that oil/molasses trick a long time ago. It’s amazing that they don’t put that in helpful hints with recipes. It seems so obvious when you’ve discovered it!

: ) I love little nice surprises like that when cooking. *huggs*

It works with honey too.

You are so dedicated to your walking.

same for cakes that call for oil and water. Pour in the oil you need…say 1/4 cup…then pour the liquid right on top of the oil and it will stay on top of the oil…then measure that up to 1/4 cup or whatever you need and pour into the bowl together. Works like a charm 🙂

RYN: Isn’t that the greatest feeling in the world? I’m still drunk with the feeling of power!

I got a good tip from my mum years ago when I was bemoaning the same problem when using syrup in baking – run the spoon under the hot tap for a few seconds & don’t dry it then the syrup should run off the spoon.
