I Am Back

I got back from Mississippi yesterday afternoon and spent the whole evening fighting off the desire to go to bed! I managed to stay up until 10 pm and then slept very well until 6 this morning.

Highlights of the two weeks:

  • Spending a day on the Gulf coast with my younger son. It was not so much the coast {although I do like the beach } but spending time with him.
  • Spending the day before I left with my older son. This was totally a surprise because usually he does not take time off work while I am there to do anything with me. We went to an art museum.
  • Meeting my daughter-in-law’s grandmother who is {I think} 86. She lives just across the road and came to a family get-together  that older son and daughter-in-law had on Palm Sunday.
  • Buying and using my new digital camera. {A Panasonic FZFZ20–5 megapixels, a Leica lens and 12x optical zoom with internal stabilization!} More about this and pictures later.
  • The weather wasn’t great but there were a couple of warm-but-not-humid sunny days.
  • Seeing my son and daughter-in-law getting along so well. There was a time when this marriage was a bit rocky –it is a second marriage for both of them–but they seem to be over that . I loved hearing them gently teasing each other as Fred and I do.
  • Using my younger son’s laptop in a coffee shop. I will bring my laptop next yoear. {He got to say “I told you so!”}
  • Finding a welcome gift for my daughter-in-law {a breadmaker like my new one } and my son {a gift certificate from Lowe’s.}
  • Making a loaf of bread from scratch for my daughter-in-law in the new machine and having her ask for the recipe.
  • Going shopping and finding the stores are full of spring and summer clothing.
  • Finding yet again that my younger son and I have excellent communication.
  • Getting back to Vermont and going outside after I picked up my luggage and seeing Fred drive up just at that moment.
  • Noticing that a lot of the snow I left piled up when I left has gone.

Things I need to do today:

  1. Wash dishes and take the trash down. {Fred was apologetic about the trash but I understand very well his reluctance to walk back behind the house over the ice that is still there. He is still a bit unsteady on his feet}
  2. Wash the dishes from last night and clean the stove from the spaghetti sauce spatter. {Incidentally, he HAD wiped up his messes as they occurred while I was gone.  I was most impressed!}
  3. Walk up to the school at 11:30 to eat lunch and read with Nick.
  4. Start unpacking and putting stuff away.
  5. Give a “lick and a promise” to the kitchen floor.
  6. Unpack and wash the new flour canisters and put the flour into them.
  7. Find a home for the blender we no longer use so I can put the flour canisters in its place.

Until later…
