Grocery Money Returned

A couple of days ago, I went to the grocery store and spent a little over $200. I was a little surprised at the total but I had bought a lot of stuff including some things that I only need to buy occasionally, and I have also noticed that once again, the same amount of groceries are costing a little more every time I go. Usually, I sit down on the bench just inside the store and look over the receipt, a habit I learned from Fred, but on this day, someone was sitting on the bench and my back was hurting really badly so I went home as quickly as I could. Today I was looking for something in my purse and I found my receipt. Imagine my surprise to find that something I had gotten from the 50% off area had been rung up at $102.25. So, I went back and, of course, the $100 was immediately credited back to my grocery-buying debit card!

I think I have mentioned that I am committed to cooking for myself from scratch at least once a week. Actually, I am finding that I am actually cooking something two to three times a week and as I haven’t quite mastered the art of cooking one portion, I am doing quite well with leftovers. I have bought a couple of books on cooking for one and/or two, but since I have a shelf of cookbooks {most of which were Fred’s,} i really have very little difficulty adapting the recipes to smaller portions. Having said all that, I forgot to buy potatoes today and had to use instant which are not at all bad if you put cream cheese in them. The bad part was that I put too much salt in the water and they were almost inedible. It was a shame, too, because I had fine-chopped two slices of a Vidalia onion and added the raw onion to the potatoes. I love this combination and I hated to throw it out ! I will go back to the grocery store and buy a couple of potatoes tomorrow. It is a whole new world buying groceries for one. When Fred was alive, whoever did the buying bought 5 pound of potatoes at a time. I can’t do that now because they grow sprouts and/or go bad before I use them up.

I am having the preliminary feelings that I might be developing a urinary tract infection. I have started drinking lots of water, more than I usually drink which may help but I know I will be up during night probably more than once. Still, if it saves me a visit to the doctor, it will be worth it…

Anything that’s human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable. When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. The people we trust with that important talk can help us know that we are not alone. ~Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers)

You are not happy because you are well. You are well because you are

happy. You are not depressed because trouble has come to you, but

trouble has come to you because you are depressed. You can change

your thoughts and feelings, and then the outer things will come to

correspond, and indeed there is no other way of working.

I’m glad you checked your bill. I was shocked by that amount. My weekly budget is $200 for a family of five with expensive Canadian food.

I have been cooking about once a week and eating pasta, salads, sandwiches, and leftovers the rest of the time. I would like to start cooking more often. I really enjoy the leftovers.

If you have to use instant potatoes again, don’t add ANY salt to them – they’re more than salty enough by themselves. Glad you could get that grocery error corrected! What a big mistake on their part… (huggles)

The price of food just kills me. I’m pretty frugal, but it still costs more than I think it should. I’m glad you got back $100!

I’m so glad you got your money back!!!

Personally, I’d skip the instant potatoes. If you have a microwave, it’s much easier to get mashed by cutting them up, putting them in bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and nuke for a few moments, then just add some butter and a wee bit of milk and mash them up. Cooks Illustrated puts out some Cooking for 2 issues, which I have found great for making smaller amounts.

Wow..that was quite an overcharge! Glad you caught it! You might also try drinking cranberry juice. I personally hate the stuff, but it has saved me from having to go to the doc several times. The nurse line for my insurance company suggested I try that rather than going to the ER (I always seem to start feeling bad on Friday evenings. :))

Wow! I sure am glad you looked at your receipt and found that mistake! I have never looked at my receipt. Maybe I should start looking at it! hugs, Nicky

A lot of shops here now ask if the person wants the receipt as they want to save paper by not printing them out. I usually say that I want the receipt as they make so many mistakes that I like to check afterwards!

When you go back for the potatoes, pick up some cranberry juice or lemon juice – the acid in those juices will help you clear up your impending infection.

I bought some underwear at Kmart this week..buy one/get one half off. I asked the clerk “did those ring up half off?” and she said they had. When I got home, they hadn’t! I was not happy! Have to go back and get a refund myself.

Oh my! I’m going to be checking my receipts more often. I’m glad you got your money back.

$100! Good thing you checked!

You could try Cranberry juice. It is really good for urinary tract infections

My husband always has to stand at the checkout counter and watch the prices being scanned..once there was a fiasco with some yogurt I bought, so now I try to pay attention too. It is great the credited your card back:) I cook a lot at home, and find that there isn’t really anyway to get past having leftovers..but, it doesn’t hurt to have it the next day..think of the money you are saving!
