Good PT News
In physical therapy this morning while I was lying on my right side, I lifted my left leg about 12 inches against gravity! I did this three times. Then, she helped me lift it higher, took away her hand, and with a lot of sweat-popping effort, I held it up for a count of five. And I did this five times.
And I came in to PT this morning thinking this was as good as it got! I was amazed that I could do this.
She did an evaluation of the strength of my leg muscles right now, and his is how she explained to me what was going on. When most hip-replacement people come in to PT, they can already do what I did this morning–lift their operated leg a little bit against gravity. She said she thinks of this as being in water up to your nose. You can breath, but not fully. When *I* came into physical therapy, I was like someone who was standing in water a foot over her head because I had lost so much muscle tone in the two months I was limping around waiting for surgery. And where I am now is like being able to breath through my nose –that is, I am at the point where most people begin.
So, PT appointments have been set for the two weeks before I go to Italy. And Leslie said she will give me a routine to do while I am gone. And when I come back, if I feel I need it, I will get another referral.

Since you’ve been to P/T, I’ve worked on some of the exercises you’ve talked about. I’m going to be in a world of hurt when I finally am able to get this surgery done…. My hips don’t rotate anymore, so I can’t do a lot of what you’re doing. I figure I’m going to be at the bottom of a very deep ocean. So glad you’re doing well though. I just knew you would! Love to you. ~M
