Going to the Store

Yesterday going to the store was on my list so off I went. I had the list of stuff that was mostly for me but I asked Fred if there was anything he had forgotten when he went up the day before. Now, if you are wondering why he didn’t get my stuff when he went yesterday, he walks around the store with his wheeled walker and some things that I wanted take up a lot of room, like large containers of washing machine detergent and bleach. He is very ingenious about hanging bags all over his walker but it just seems to work out better if I get my personal stuff like toothpaste and mouthwash and the household stuff that I use.

He asked me to get him some Ovaltine while I was up there so I tracked it down to the aisle and shelf where it was and prepared to put it in my cart. Now, I haven’t drunk Ovaltine since I was a child so I was surprised to find three different flavors and had to call Fred to ask him did he want chocolate, malt or chocolate and malt? Actually, I should have guessed because he likes malty taste and loves chocolate! But that got me thinking of the convenience of cell phones.

I am of an age that I grew up without a cell phone {or a television or computer, come to that.} I actually dislike the idea of being available twenty-four hours a day to all and sundry. Well, you might say, why do you even have a cell phone? I got it first after Fred came out of hospital after his colon surgery so that I could go for a walk or out to get groceries and be available if there was an emergency of any kind. {Long-time readers will perhaps remember that he checked himself out of the hospital against medical advice. Newer readers need to know that this was the best thing he could have done because he improved amazingly once he was home. But it did have me stressed out for a bit!} Anyway, back to the what Italians call il telefonino. Altough I don’t go around with it stuck to my ear like so many people, I actually like very much the convenience of being able to find out immediately things like which Ovaltine Fred wants!

I carried my stuff to the front of the store, had it checked out and paid for it, loaded it and myself into my car and came home. And that was when I discovered my stick wasn’t in the car. I had left it hanging over the handle of the cart I had used, and  most likely I had forgotten it because that wasn’t a place I usually put it. When it is in the cart with the groceries, I always remember it because I see it. Anyway, I drove back and there it was, right where I had left it so I didn’t have to go into the store.

AND, when I came back, there was a package left between the screen door and the other door. And, inside the package were my "Dr. Who: Season 4 DVDs"! So, you don’t have to guess what I did the rest of the afternoon and what I will be doing today, do you?

I used to hate mobile ‘phones but now I wouldn’t be without one as they can be so useful. It’s only been the last ten years here that people have been using them here.

I don’t want to be available all the time either, but like you I sure like the convenience of being able to call (Joe, usually) if I have a question or problem or announcement to make. :o) !! I’m glad your Dr. Who DVDs arrived! hugs, Weesprite

I’m with you on the cell phone issue. I can’t figure out what people think is so important that they have to talk on it all the time, but it sure does come in handy at the grocery store sometimes!

I still only use my cell phone when I’m on the road. The early Dr Whos are the best with the cheesy costumes and shaky sets! One early episode I remember in particular was with giant moths or butterflies??….

My mom tried a cell phone when I was in high school, and decided she didn’t like it and gave to me when I got my driver’s license. Now, 7 years later, she’s gotten one again, and I think it’s adorable when she calls me up from random locations with an idea, or a question. The other day she called me from the store when I happened to be driving past on my way home from a weekend trip (this particular store is about 45 minutes from my home–I was just passing through) so I stopped in and we went shopping and got dinner!

Damned new-fangled gadgets. I remembered my father never really liking telephones, and when dial-ups came along I don’t think he ever used it to call anybody. I wonder what he would say about cell phones? He grew up when there were no cars, no radios, no airplanes, no electric, no nuthin.’ Sheesh.

I love Ovaltine…the same Malt one that you got. Umhappily, I can’t have dairy at the moment or I’d be off to the grocery store to find some for ME. Enjoy your Dr. Who. David likes that too! Love ya! ~M
