Fred Today
Fred was doing very well yesterday. But today he seems to have slipped back… Today he is being moved to a nursing home where there are supposed to be good rehab facilities.
I always think of nursing homes as places where old people are put to die. When I kissed him before I left the hospital I had such a strong feeling that he was going to die at this place they are sending him to.
His daughter and I are going there to see him tomorrow…
I have just had a phone call from an old friend who can always make me laugh. This is someone I have known for twenty years– I can’t believe it has been that long… I have, at least, stopped crying.

"We are taught you must blame your father, your sisters, your brothers, the school, the teachers – but never blame yourself. It’s never your fault. But it’s always your fault, because if you wanted to change you’re the one who has got to change." — Katherine Hepburn

Oh Patrisha, that’s such a terrible feeling to deal with. I understand why you think that way. Here…a story to perhaps give you hope, I hope. When I was hit by a car some 15 years ago, a lady of 69 was also hit. She spent a year in hospital and a further 8 months in a rehabilitation centre/nursing home getting better. She was the chirpiest, toughest soul. The ‘nursing home’ did just what it wassupposed to do…it ‘nursed’ her back to health and to life. I hope it will do the same for Fred. Sending you lots of hugs Patrisha. Lots of emotions going on for you. Hang tough.

oh! I’m so sorry. I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling right now. I hope you’re wrong in your feeling about Fred going there to die. I hope they really are a good rehab place.

It’s probably so natural to have the feelings that you had, but I suspect they are just born out of fear and anxiety, not something inevitible. I agree with your other noters — their job is to nurse him back to health! It’s natural to have good days and bad days right now. When I had hip replacement surgery my family could not believe how fabulous I looked, acted and sounded just hours after getting out of surgery. The next day when they came to see me they were very surprised to see that I didn’t look half as good as I had the day before. I’m wishing Fred a full and quick recovery.

They have made such strides with rehab over the years. I hope this is a very good facility that will help him a lot. May you and Fred have many more good years together.

When T’s Aunt Mitzi broke her hip and went into a rehab place, it was one of those “beginning of the end” feelings for us, too, but she loved the place. It was really nice…like an upscale hotel, and didn’t have that “nursing home” feel at all. She made friends and worked hard at her own recovery (an essential ingredient, in my opinion), and she’s still going strong. It’s been 4 or 5 years now, Ithink.

Please give Fred my regards and take care of yourself.

I’m so sorry that this is all going on. I am hoping that Fred receives the care and attention he needs at this place so that he can come home to you soon. I’m sending prayers and love your way.

Very frightening. Still, I have a couple of older friends who have done the “nursing home / rehab thing and have come out stronger on the other side. One is 92. Hoping for the best and thinking of you and Fred aften.

Oh this is so hard for you to go through and I can see how you would feel that way but there are certainly folk who go in there who get nursed back to good health and can go home again. And Fred has such a strong spirit – that will definitely stand him in good stead!

I just got caught up on your entries about Fred. I’m so off and on about OD lately that I didn’t even realize he was in the hospital. I’m so sorry to hear about this and about how hard it’s been on you. Sometimes I think it’s harder on the family than the patient. Sending up prayers for both of you. Hugs,M
