Dealing with the Blues
Yesterday evening I gradually noticed I had the blues. It was nothing I could put a label on—just inchoate sadness that had sneaked up on me. Since I couldn’t go for a walk–no energy and it was dark outside–I stuck the earbuds in my ears and turned the IPod on, but, to my surprise, this didn’t totally drive the sadness away. And I had one of those nights where although I went to bed at a reasonable hour, I didn’t get to sleep until 3 am. This morning I am still down and feeling a little blue. {Although there is music in my ears–marches–I LOVE marches!} So, my plan for the day includes getting some stuff done which always helps me feel better.
Oh, the Ipod has just changed to Art Garfunkel’s "Breakaway" which is one of my favorite albums. I decided that I didn’t want total shuffle of songs this morning even though I usually have that as my default setting. So, I have shuffle songs off and shuffle albums on. Oh, and the Ipod is tucked into the top of my pants since I have just realized I have NO pockets!
Tentative list of things to do to get myself out of this swamp of despondency. No promises, though–
- make banana bread. {This is baking even as I speak–errr, write}
- go for a walk {after the banana bread is done.}
- watch "Cranford." I love movies with Judi Dench. {And when I said at the book club I was going to get it, everyone who had not seen it on "Masterpiece" requested to borrow it!}
- clean the kitchen. This can be done while I am waiting for the bread to finish.
- perhaps clean the bathroom?
- make the bed which will be done when Fred gets out of it. This is done daily because the bed is where I read and watch television and I get irritable when I have to straighten it before I turn on the TV in the evening so I have the habit of doing it in the morning when I have some energy.
Until later…

I was sort of feeling that way, too, actually. I think I’ve figured out what the root of mine was, though. I often tuck my iPod in my bra if I don’t have any pockets. 🙂

Hope your blues go away. I know how that can be. With me, it’s usually diet-related…when I’ve been eating too many processed whatevers. I’m definitely on the slippery slope. Time to get back on track!

I love Breakaway. His voice is so sweet. “I gradually noticed I had the blues…” Time to change the diary colors. ;-p hugs,

I get the blues now and again. I do the same thing of seeking out sources of comfort and things that will lift me up out of my doldrums. I hope you are able to climb out of the blues soon! Mmmmm…I love good banana bread! (((Hugs)))

I hate when those blues creep up on me, and I can’t put a finger on the reason, so it’s hard to fight it off. It sounds like you’re determined to do just that though, and I think you’ll succeed…. it sounds like you have a good day planned!

As a kid I would see my old ma sitting in a corner of the living room and I would ask, What’s the matter, ma, and she would answer, I’m just feeling blue. Hmmm, no banana bread back then. Just had a piece now and it was delicious. Blues ain’t all that bad to have occurred. Wa ta go, pussycat.

I have a case of the woe is me’s….I’m going to clean my way out of it. 🙂

Hope you are feeling better. I must admit that I have been feeling ok lately. Who knows why but usually when I don’t think too much.

I hope you feel better. I’ve felt that way before — inexplicably despondent, but you can’t put your finger on why. I think that baking banana bread, walking, and cleaning are the best things to help you through that! Excercise and cleaning usually help me. Sometimes, I find, that lack of exercise and slightly messy surroundings can bring about those inexplicable feelings of sadness.

yes Judi Dench is fantastic isn’t she. A masterpiece in herself. Those blues have mean tendancy of sneaking up like that without us noticing them – could just be a sign of the changing of seasons? Great that you have a ‘plan’ to help you try to shake them. Hope you are succesful!

Good luck with the blues. I’ve found baking something really does help, there is something irresistibly cheery about something fragrant and sweet in the oven. Many hugs, and remind yourself that the blues are just a mood, they will pass.

We are SO different – somehow cleaning and clearing would NEVER clear the blues away! Not for me anyway!

I recognize the blues, and sympathize. They do sneak up on you, don’t they?

I took a St. John’s Wort capsule this morning, to alleviate the blues a bit, and it helped. I have been having waves of sadness and emptiness off and on in the past three weeks, due to the youngest son leaving home. I am finding my house to be so empty all the time. I knew there was a problem when I was feeling the blues, and yet hubby was home. I’m still trying to pull myself out of this.
