Bah!
If you can lie on your right side, put your legs together with the knees bent slightly and then raise the upper leg in the air, rejoice. I can’t. it hurts—a lot. And not anywhere near the incision or in the hip but in the groin muscle. I have been very depressed all day because of this. I feel as if I should be able to do this because the physical therapist looked so surprised that I couldn’t. She put her hand under my leg to help me and I had to tell her to stop because it hurt enough to bring tears to my eyes. I can stand and swing this leg out 8 to 10 times. I can lie on my back and, with a little help to get started, I can raise it 3 or 4 times. I can swing it out to the side 25 times in the pool with no pain. I just can’t raise it when lying on my side.
Anyway, Fred and I went out to the Peking Duck to eat tonight and I feel a lot better. I have been moping around the house all day –although I DID get a half-mile walk in–and getting out was a good thing.
Pool therapy tomorrow. The first week I went, there were only two of us in a local hotel pool, and two therapists. Last week there were three of us getting therapy, two therapists AND hotel guests also coming in and out — including a couple who insisted on using the hot tub which was very noisy when the jets were turned on. And let us not forget the other couple with the two-month-old baby. {I asked}. And a very cute little girl who came in just to splash her feet in the water! Her mother took her to the other end and told us in the shallow end that the girl had been talking about splashing her feet in the pool the whole time they had been traveling!

Well, of COURSE, I had to lie down on the floor and try that exercise to try to figure it out. It sounds as if they are trying to strengthen your abductors, but what I can’t figure out is why the GROIN would hurt, because when I did it, I didn’t even use those muscles. That is very odd. Does the groin hurt if you do the same thing on the other side? It’s also odd that it only hurts when you are lying down and not when you are doing the exercise standing up. The main difference would be gravity. What a puzzle! I’m sure you’ll figure it out, though.

Did the physical therapist give you any hints on loosening your muscles to aid in doing those leg lifts? I understand how frustrating this must be to you since everything else is coming along so well. I hope you don’t let it get you down too much though! (((Hugs)))

I don’t know why it hurts but if you can do all the other exercises, does it matter? I wouldn’t worry about it. Babies aren’t supposed to be in hot tubs longer than five minutes. I time Ben and me every time. It is bad for their circulation.

ryn: very frustrating but puzzling. Think of it as a puzzle that will be solved in due course. You’ve done so well on everything that a minor setback here and there is to be expected. You remind me of me. My favorite saying is “I want patience and I want it RIGHT NOW!!!” LOL!

Look at all of the things you can do and how far you have come in such a short period of time. At least, that’s what I see here. I know it’s SO easy to only think of the pain and what can’t be done. Easy for me to say. But, what I do remember is how I felt like I was never going to be back to the way I was before I hurt my knee. Sadly, I wasn’t….but this is the way the cookie (or knee/hip)crumbles. *sigh*

I can tell you’re frustrated. You know it’s temporary. You’ll master that too.

Hmmm, that one has me puzzled. BUT, I agree with some of the other noters. This is a minor setback compared to what you have already accomplished. Besides, how often in everyday life would you be moving your leg like that anyway? Huge hugs, M

Did you try this standing on your head in the corner? Me neither, but I thought I would ask, and give you something else to think about that maybe you could get into the next few weeks. Now have some FUN…dan

I can’t do that either, the pain in my hip gets to the excruciating level. Just keep trying, and I am very glad that the PT is helping you.

ok, I’m rejoicing but …. there is a little muscle at the top of my thigh in the groin that hurts if I do this long enough. And, it uses my abdominal muscles – don’t know whether it should or not. But then, I’ve doing this one regularly since I was 14 (however, I have no abdominal muscles at all any more.Shame). I know how frustrating this is. In pilates class I just lay and laugh at myself because I can’t even more my body from the mat sometimes. But…. keep doing even a teeny weeny movement. I mean, put your knees together and don’t even lift if you cant – just try to lift until it hurts. Slowly slowly – perhaps horribly slowly – you will make that muscle work. Just don’t over do it- do what you can, even if your knees don’t part. Ok – one of the exercises I have involve laying like this and lifing my hip from the mat. It has taken me months and I can still only lift off about 1cm. But… I couldn’t move at all before. And anyway …. this isn’t going to stop you from walking Patricia. You will ger there without this.

But do you really NEED to do this? If you don’t, it doesn’t really matter if you can’t!

Maybe you pulled a groin muscle somehow, and that is why you can’t do that one exercise. It’s amazing how we can sometimes pull a muscle without knowing how and when we did it. But I agree with one of your other noters…. remember all the things you CAN do!! :o) !! You are doing great! :o) !! hugs, Weesprite

all you can do is to keep at it. eventually, you’ll be able to do it. as soon as i finish this note, i’m going to see if i can do it. you can do so many other things. you’re able to walk half a mile!! you’ll get there. take care,

You’ll get to the point where this exercise will be simple too. The fact that you’ve been working on all the others and not this one is likely why those muscles aren’t working how you’d like them too. 🙂

Something certainly to ask the doctor about but since it’s only affecting that particular piece of therapy and not with the everyday events of your life it would seem that it shouldn’t be something to be depressed about but something set aside until you can find out why it’s happening.

Don’t forget that up until you got this fixed it wasn’t functioning properly. That means your muscles got “lazy” if you will, and it will take time and perserverence to bring them back up to par. It will happen! Just keep working on it! Hugs. Love you! ~M
