An Entry!

Yesterday and this morning were both very stressful.

Fred had a prescription for pain pills and he was obviously in pain. I mean, if the doctor gives you a prescription for pain pills, then one should take them, right? Not him! Instead he moaned and groaned {literally} all night. Now, I didn’t hear a thing because I had knocked myself out with Klonopin. But at 5 am, he woke me up saying he needed orange juice for low blood sugar. So, I got him some. He was obviously in pain. He wasn’t quiet about it.

The prescription says 1 to 2 every four hours. So I gave him two of them and some water and as his head hit the pillow, he went to sleep. At 9 am, I half woke him and gave him one more. When I was in pain after abdominal surgery four years ago, I was told to keep some in my system. I was told NOT to wait until the pain was severe but to take one every four hours. So, I reminded him of this when I gave him the 9 am one. He went to sleep.

At 12, the visiting nurse came in, told me I was doing the right thing, woke him up and took blood and inspected his stapled abdomen. I got him up about four and he took his pills, ate a bowl of cereal, drank coffee and went back to bed, It is now 4 pm and he is asleep still.

Well, if he is up all night, I won’t notice. Half a Klonopin knocks me out.

He said the pain has subsided {pain pills will do that for you I didn’t say sarcastically} and he feels much better…

Until later…

I am glad that you got him to take those pain pills, will be easier on both of you.

December 20, 2004

i hope he heals quickly so you two can get back to a normal life of being happy with each other. take care,

I can understand not wanting to take those things, but if the pain gets bad, I take ’em. No questions asked! Aren’t men strange creatures?

December 20, 2004

Yep, there’s a reason they call it pain ‘management’. Men can be SO stubborn.

December 20, 2004

I wonder why guys insist on hurting rather than taking pain pills? I have seen that over and over. Hope he gets to feeling better really soon.

December 20, 2004

*huggs* I hope he is bette soon and hope you are doing alright.

December 20, 2004

Geez. He’s about enough to drive ya crazy, isn’t he? At the moment, I mean. I feel for ya! Most definitely! But you are doing the right thing. It’s good that YOU know what has to be done, and good that he will take the pills when you hand them to him, even though you really shouldn’t have to do that! I’m glad you get to sleep, at least. You need it! hugs,

Typical man!!

December 20, 2004

well at least he’s listening to you about the pills now

December 20, 2004

Yup, pain pills are prescribed so you don’t have to bite the bullet. Hope tonight is better.

Fighting pain retards the healing process, which is why they give us pain pills. It isn’t just to see us not suffer. Taken as prescribed they will promote healing because he will not be all stressed out from dealing with the pain. Tell him that, please. Hugs to you.

I wish I could understand why there is such reluctance towards treating pain. Screaming in agony is not at all macho! I’m glad that Fred is getting rest — and so are you!

December 20, 2004

I’m like him in that aspect. I hate taking these pain killers, but will take them if the pain gets too much. I’m sooo afraid to become addicted, so I’m being stupid by doing that!

Best Wishes

December 20, 2004

You are absolutely right. TAKE them. If you don’t the pain will take over and it will take twice as long for the meds to do any good! Hmmmm, mouthy man???? Here, Dear……..take a pill LOL. What a concept! Seriously, hang in there. It will get better… Love you! ~M

Well, I’m glad he is still with us! What a load to dump on you, though. Sounds like you are being a good nurse!

I am so glad that you have the Fred and pain situation under control.

December 20, 2004

I’ve heard that too–that it’s better to take the pain pills at regular intervals than to wait till things are really bad. I think it is a “guy” thing. My dad was like this.
