Turning season (2)

Last week, we looked for a second time at Jesus’ washing of the disciples feet at the last supper. It has two meanings. Understand first however, that it was customary that when a group or party conviened at someone’s home, that the host would have a hired servant waiting at the door to clean the feet of the guests as they arrived. In the event that the host could not afford such a service, then the first guest to arrive would assume this duty, freeing the host to prepare the food and welcome guests.

The last supper was taking place at a rental room, essentially, and none of the disciples saw to take this duty on themselves. So when Jesus, the host, and their leader, stooped to this function, the disciples were ashamed in the least, for having neglected this duty. Jesus spoke while he did this, and most people interpret his words to mean “I am doing an act of service for you. Go now and serve each other”. This interpretation is the basis for “Servant Leadership” – which is a powerful leadership dynamic.

A second interpretation which coincides comes from his explaination: “You have already had a bath, so you only need the dirt from the road washed away.””As I have done this for you, and am the master, so you must do it for each other” (my paraphrase). The context here is the “bathing” of baptism. All of these men had been cleaned once fully in the forgiveness of Jesus when they followed him. Now, Jesus is saying” you only need to be forgiven for the sins that you accumulate from your walk. As I forgive you this way, so you must forgive each other the daily bumps and grinds that come from your journies together”.

His message? Forgive each other. As I have forgiven you.

Very good study.

I am still interested in getting to know Jill more. However, a new contender has started attending our group. We seem to have a much more instant rapport, but *smile* I am – at least I try to be – careful to make sure Jill knows she comes first. This is all a very subtle thing, and I am looking forward to see how my SAD plays into this in the coming months. Jill has never really seen me in the peak of my general depression. (Few do, as I am pretty much hidden during that time).

I have been elected to the Board of Directors of the land where I often camp. I am doing the mind work right now on taking over the production of the newsletter and website for the local bicycling group. I judged at a debate tournament last weekend, and had a blast writing specific notes to each of the teams (I judged mostly novice rounds). I continue to do specific things for individuals in my life (both online and off) that help them, and I appreciate that.

And through all of this, I continue to try very hard not to miss my very best friend.
