On Music Composition

In regards to music and its composition, of course I believe there is creativity involved in its creation.  But I don’t believe it is purely inspiration at all.  I think all musical combinations, chords, riffs, possibilities…they already exist, in the same way numbers exist, and variables…the creativity is what opens the mind to the possibilities.  A small talent composer can spend his whole life playing with the tools of musical composition and compose mediocre pieces only to stumble upon one piece of a melody that captures an emotion common to all…that one little piece, that one specific possibility, is what makes a truly great piece of music.  At least…this is what I have observed.
