What is “The Truth?”
I’ve been pondering this interesting statement from a video by an Indian yogi, Shri M. He said, “Very few people actually want to seek out the truth for themselves.” And this, “Very few people are actually seekers of the truth.”
I understand where Shri M is coming from, but I have this reaction: How many people have the time and motivation to dive deep into the very heart of existence and consciousness and seek something as abstract as “the truth?” There are universal truths, individual and personal truths, and truths explicated by enlightened beings. Most people have to survive and the “truth” is their daily lives and experiences. One does not have to be an intellectual to know intuitively the “truths” in metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy. It helps but is not the be all and end all.
I become skeptical when people build themselves up by putting others down, and the statement made by the yogi reeks of that. I like your thoughts about it, and your eloquent way of saying it.
@catholicchristian Thank you! Yes, I find that so-called “wise” or enlightened people are really just people like us deep down. They maintain a veneer of personal invincibility and all-knowingness when no one can truthfully claim to know so much. If I have to seek out a guru then maybe I’m admitting I can’t think for myself?

“Seeking of truth” is often a luxury for many people.
@journalsecret Well said! It is indeed!

The only “truth” is: we live and we die. Everything in-between is the invention of our big brains.
@solovoice And thank God for our big brains! 🙂

Sometimes hard to differentiate between seeking out facts and interpreting those facts into larger, more universal truths. Perspective keeps getting in the way.
@icarusknew I think I will always know I’m thinking for myself and rightfully questioning things when I’m interpreting what others say and think about how their “facts” or beliefs differ from mine.
Always good to see a comment from you here!

I would interpret the statements as practicing mindfulness and remaining open to new thoughts or ideas. To recognize what is around and outside of oneself. That really doesn’t take time, just the desire.
@elkay Eloquently expressed! Unfortunately, time and desire are needlessly mutually exclusive! 🥺

Those who desire to seek are free to do so. Those who know truth as it relates to them are free to think that. I am a little more cynical in saying truth is not all it is cracked up to be. Stimulating food for thought. 😎
@tracker Ah yes, but those who know “truth as it relates to them” or those who know The Truth”? That’s when it gets messy! 🙂
