Autumn thoughts

The air has been cool and crisp.   Autumn has fully descended, and I love the memories and associations of this time of year.   I like to eat pumpkin muffins and honey crisp apples.   I walk out on the porch to get some fresh air and it feels so wonderful, a cool tonic to the spirit.   The crepe myrtles  are just about bare now, opening up the clear, blue skies.

I think one of the reasons I have always liked Autumn is that I am such a romantic and idealist at heart.   I dream too often perhaps of what might have been:  the smoky smell of burning leaves that I have raked into a big pile in the front yard of my old, white clapboard country house, the one with the big wrap-around porch.   There’s a fire in the fireplace, the sofa is full of books and magazines to read, a cup of hot chocolate waits, steaming on top of the wicker table on the porch.   The sounds of children laughing and playing in the distance fill the air, dogs bark occasionally, and birds vie for a place in the birdbath, joyfully splashing each other….  I am alone, an old man.   This is my life as I can envision it.

Old is always 20 years older than you are at the moment. That’s what I say, any way 🙂 Nice new photo…I like the contemplative look! Mmm, pumpkin muffins and honey crisp apples SOUND like autumn. I just read a book that was written in the same tone you write…your entry here could have been in it!

The author is Charles Frazier: Nightwoods (wrote Cold Mountain and Thirteen Moons). I’m married but my husband is on the road so much, only home a total of two months out of the year if you add all the weeks he’s home up together. Even in a group, I often feel alone. It’s why I write here…Kandinsky said it best: [her] joyful vision cloaks a vast sorrow. I write to create joy and to connect.

I suffer from melancholy much too often. I hope you have hot chocolate and a delicious book this weekend!

Feels more like winter here some days, but, thankfully, the more seasonal weather is hanging on a little longer. Pumpkin muffins and honey crisp apples sound yummy! My sister-in-law and her family made fresh apple cider earlier this fall. So good!

RYN: Thank you for your kinds words. You would have liked Bear too. Autumn is my favorite season as well. I tend to think of it, for some reason, as more of a beginning time than an ending time. And I suppose we all wonder about our visions of life, don’t we? I think “alone” can translate into “solitude” and the opportunity for a rich, contemplative life, while old is merely a gift ofmore days, offering the chance to share one’s gifts a little longer…just as you share some of yours here. I’m thankful for that! And I like your thoughtful countenance in the new picture.

Old? No way. I hope you have many, many more years of sharing your beautiful pictures with us. I like the contemplative look in your new profile picture.
