An old man’s fantasy

Just about every evening now during this unending Age of the Coronavirus,  I emerge from my cozy sanctuary, get in the car, and drive a short distance to a park along the Ashley River.  For years, for some strange reasons of my own, I didn’t come out here, but since he pandemic I’ve discovered that it’s one of the best places in Charleston to watch the sunsets each evening.

Late today, I observed yet another stunning sunset in the distance.  As is my habit, I started to walk along the riverbank, camera ready, toward the sinking orb which was painting  the clouds orange and pink above vast tidal marshes whose grasses are lit gold in that magical light.  The terrible heat of the day was subsiding.  A gentle breeze was blowing off the river. People had come out  and were sitting in lawn chairs or on blankets in the grass to watch the evening spectacle.  Some  came with their dogs to a dog park  where their best friends could run free to their hearts content.  Children laughed and played in an elaborate playground.

All was like a dream.  Peaceful, idyllic.. and presumably quiet out on the pier where my walk ends to take pictures.

But tonight, as occasionally happens, I started hearing music coming from an anchored and apparently abandoned houseboat in the middle of the river.  The music got louder.  I feared the worst — loud booming rap shattering the calm as revelers tie up to the houseboat and held  an impromptu party oblivious to anyone else around them, as is so often the case..

But tonight something special and totally unexpected happened.  Instead of that horrible boom box music I usually hear came the familiar sounds of a 60 year-old-hit.  I couldn’t believe my ears.  I silently whispered “Thank you,” as an older couple got up from a bench and started polka dancing..   Several young people joined in, trying to imitate the suddenly spy and energized  seniors.  I listened and gazed in awe at what I heard and saw.  Pinch me, I’m dreaming.

I like the YouTube channel you linked here!  We watch Lawrence Welk every Sunday afternoon, it’s on PBS.

@trunorth  The Show May have been corny, but it was full of optimism and happiness, with unforgettable characters like Myron Floren.  I always loved his accordion playing.  My fave star though has got to be Jo Ann Castle.  How I loved her ragtime piano numbers.  You could tell she loved life.  Had my feet stomping!  Still does.  🙂

Wow — that sounds like a really special moment.  A wonderful memory.

If you’re in SC I have a dear friend who lives pretty close to you.

And my link to Lawrence Welk is that my parents (well probably my mother mostly) watched the show every time, and she wanted me to grow up to be a pianist on his show.  Obviously that didn’t work out …

@ghostdancer  lol.  Well, she had high hopes for you.  My aunt watched the show all the time, and I got my appreciation of it from her.

Yes, I live in Charleston.  It really is quite beautiful here.

I’m so glad I came here and read this entry. What a beautiful evening you shared with us.  I could close my eyes and stand on that dock, feel the breeze coming off the river and then smile with joy as I watched the older couple dance to a well-loved hit.  Thank you for sharing this.

@adrift   Thank you, my friend.  It was fun writing this.

I think this might be the most beautiful song yet by Dimash!

@oswego Thank you so much for alerting me to this new song by Dimash. I haven’t listened to it before now. It is now one of my top favorites. It is so beautiful!  Based on a Chinese  poem about friendship across the miles. I saw one video of this where he says, he hoped that his song would” build a bridge across cultures.”  I had to find a video with an English translation. Dimash sings these lyrics so heartfully . I love the many descriptive phrases about nature… “Ever echoing birdsong in our ears, In my arms sleep the moon.”  The overall theme… “Together or apart, near or far, sharing a heart friends still we are.”  It is one of his most beautiful songs. Thank you, my friend. I will listen to this over and over again.

@adrift I’m posting my note again!

I’m so glad you feel similarly about this song.  It’s definitely one that I will be coming back to again and again.  It’s very soothing and peaceful.

Most of my adult life I’ve listened primarily to  instrumental music, as so many singers, while talented and with good, sometimes soaring and majestic voices,  never really moved me to the core like Dimash has.  It’s also due a lot to the intense emotion he feels and his mesmerizing stage presence.

At my age it’s a long time coming, but how thrilled Iam that it arrived in the person of Dimash.

Saw this one today:
