E-Lo….. and everything else…
Well she’s here. Asleep, but here. I couldn’t sleep last night, Mike was tossing and turning (ugh) and my eyes just wouldn’t shut. This is so unlike me because normally I’m the sort of person that can sleep on a concrete slab and be happy. Last night nothing was happening. I’d close my eyes but my brain kept working such long hours that I finally decided (at 4.15am) that it was ridiculous and to just get up, shower, get ready and dibble dabble around. I left home at about 5am for the airport. It’s really only a 35-40 minute drive (max) at that hour, but I didn’t want to wake everyone else just because I couldn’t sleep so I figured that I could at least grab a coffee and wait at the gate for Em’s plane.
The plane was due at 5.55am. As luck would have it there were no coffee shops open at all (not even crappy maccas coffee!!!) so I had to be content to simply sit at the gate. The two ‘Boost’ juice girls had arrived for work early and were sitting on the counter having a good old chat about their latest boy toys. I checked the arrivals sign and it kept blinking "delayed" next to Em’s plane…I listened to the VIrgin Blue staff page countless people who obviously hadn’t arrived at the airport in time for their flight. I don’t know about anyone else but when it comes to planes and airports I’m quite vigilent about getting there and checking in early! No chance of me missing the flight… I’d rather get there 5 hours early and sit around than miss a plane. Hehe.
Anyway, finally it landed. I was told by Emma to watch for her carrying her pink, floppy hat (as she didn’t want it crushed in her luggage)… Trust me to then not be watching when she did come out. Luckily she recognised me (in all my early morning glory). We headed off to baggage which was an interesting experience, she couldn’t remember what her suitcases looked like! So we waited and waited and waited and waited and finally she recognised her first bag. Then we waited and waited and waited and waited and it wasn’tuntil the conveyor belt stopped that we realised that one of the remaining bags HAD to be hers. Emma decided to open the one most likely to have her stuff and thankfully it was hers. We then stopped by Macca’s for some revolting coffee (which was, by this time open) before jumping in the car and hitting peak hour traffic.
Once home she watched bleary eyed (and I don’t blame her!) while I rushed around getting ready for Ma’s funeral. It took quite awhile to organise her funeral because the Coroner originally wanted to perform an autopsy, which shocked us quite a bit, but it is apparently because there wasn’t a doctor around at her time of death to certify the cause. In the end they were satisfied that she did pass away of natural causes (stroke), but it kinda held things up.
Anyway, I felt bad about leaving Em on her first day but she reassured me that she would sleep and everything would be A-ok.
The funeral went along nicely. It was a big catholic mass which I found a little bit boring (having not been to one for many many years), but I got up and read the Prayers of the Faithful and it all went off fine.
By the time the wake came around I was really tired. I’m still really tired (having just got home and change into trackies) but Em has wken up now and if watching me whilst I play anti-social host!
Gotta fly.

No coffee shops open? Isn’t that ILLEGAL or something? Wow, I’m surprised (and glad) you made it through that!

What a day. You know that an apple has the same boost that a cup of coffee can give you? It’s true, I read it somewhere…or say it on tv…so obviously it must be true 😛 hehe. But yea, I really did hear that..or something. Hope all is well now and that Em is enjoying her stay there 😀

maybe you should tie something (a ribbon) on her luggage so she can recognize it when she goes home.

Where does Em come from (I missed that bit). I had to read the Prayers of the Faithful at a wedding once…I’m not a Catholic and people still laugh now, as I got up and said I would be grateful if people could respond on cue….well I didn’t want any sticky silences!

*laughs* The airport can be an amusing place to be in early in the morning or really late at night. All sorts of snippets of conversation being heard, all sorts of everyday happenings occurring around you. For some reason I love just being there, despite not liking to fly very much 🙂 Glad Emma made it there safely!

Have I noted here yet? We went to the airport the other morning and were also disgusted to find out that there is no coffee available at 5am! What are the airport people thinking? Anyway, I hope you’ve caught up on the missed sleep and are having lots of fun with the visitor.

I know what you mean about airports. I think its something to do with my Dad being in Army or the fact that I am obsessed with being on time. I would rather be early sitting around than to miss my plane. Oh and I ALWAYS forget what my bags look like. I’m thinking of investing in some brightly coloured ones just so I can remember.
