Three-che’
My Mikey, I love you

I don’t know if I can type a coherent entry yet. My Mikey and I just shared a big laugh because of a story I told him about my sister, Mary Helen.
Once, in the early 90s, just after she’d moved to Austin, my sister was in the parking lot of a grocery store, when she happened to see a little 3-4 year old boy doing the usual tugging-on-Mama-saying-Mama-look-Mama-can-I-Mama-
Mama-Mama thing. Well, we all know how annoying that can be, but what happened next was extremely UNjustified.
As my sister watched the mother and son, the mother backhanded the little boy and sent him sprawling. Well, I can tell you right now…I’m not the only one in my family who will protect children when they need it. MH went up to that lady right there in the lot, intending to tell her she was going to call the police on her or something. What did she do instead? She punched the woman right in the face!!!!!!
The woman said she was going to call the police on MH and tell them MH assaulted her. MH said, "Yeah right, lady! And HOW MANY witnesses do we have to your child abuse?!!!!"
I was so proud of my sister that day, but I was also afraid for her. I told her that doing things like that might get her killed someday. For instance, what if that woman was driving around with her husband (boyfriend, lesbian lover, whatever), and she saw my sister somewhere and said, "Hey, that’s the bitch that hit me at the store!"
Husbands, boyfriends, and lesbian lovers all tend to have a violent streak of protectiveness, it seems. That’s what I was afraid of happening to MH, but nothing ever did.
It reminded me of another time MH had punched someone in the face, right in front of me, and in order to protect ME.
When we were kids, for a few summers, we could get free lunches at Sam Houston Elementary. I don’t remember why they gave them in the summertime, but I don’t care. It was nice that they did. Anyway, there was this boy named Chris who loved to pick on me….incidentally, he and I later became friends….and he annoyed the shit out of MH.
One time, after I finished eating first, I went outside. Chris was out there. MH was inside. Chris started picking on me. Back then, I didn’t deal with that at all. I stayed quiet and just took it. Sometimes, I find myself doing that now, even. Not so with my sister, though. She NEVER took anything lying down! She walked out the door of the cafeteria, and she heard Chris picking on me. She told him he needed to shutup and leave me alone. Mind you, she was not even a teenager yet, or maybe 13 or 14, at the oldest. Chris was my age, so we were about 11 or 12, I guess.
Boyfriend had the nerve to pull out a razor blade and ask my sister, "Whatcha gonna do about it, bitch?!"
That was the WRONG thing to ask my sister. You just DON’T try to intimidate Mary Helen at all. It won’t work! She walked up to him at the speed of light, it seemed, punched him right in the face, and said, "THAT’S what I’m gonna do about it, you little sonofabitch!"
See, she did protect me against the world. Always has. The only problem is, while she’s being my savior, she seems to think that gives HER the right to mistreat me. It doesn’t, but we’ll just have to work that out someday.
Right now I want to be proud of my sister, so I am. Deal with it!
Anyway……
This is so NOT what I was going to write a
bout. I just remembered and decided to tell the stories.
Have a good day, everyone.
Love,
Jack

Sometimes Mary helen can be a true gem. I may not be one of her favorite people on the planet, but at least she protects her brother.
