Practice letter I – gotta get ready for this

In case anyone didn’t read the subject line, this is only practice for what might lie ahead in the future.

Dear Nathaneal,

I have to tell you some really sad news today, sweet boy.  Please find Tante and have her sit beside you before you read any more.

Your grandmother ("Grandma Laurie") died today.  She has been battling addiction to pain and anxiety medications for years, and they finally got the upper hand.

Sweet baby, I need you to know that there was nothing you could do to stop this from happening.  I tried my hardest to keep it from happening, myself.  I talked to her doctor.  I flushed her meds….the doctor just gave her more.  The more he gave her, the more she took.

Your Grandma was always in a lot of pain.  Her body hurt, and her spirit hurt.  It wasn’t because of us, baby.  It was because of things that happened to her when she was younger.  Nothing could ever take away how much she hurt, and now she’s gone because of it.

I am so very sorry, my precious grandson.  I never wanted to have to tell you anything like this.

Please know you ALWAYS have your Grandpa Herman to talk to, lean on, and help you in any way I can.  I love you, and your Grandma loved you, too.

I’m sorry,

Grandpa Herman
