People are stupid about Christmas *Edit*

Oh my God, people can be stupid about Christmas, shopping, presents, everything!  I had NO IDEA my little sister, who lives in our house, had any money to go Christmas shopping with.

Here’s the deal.  We don’t have much left on our (pre-paid) electric account.  In fact, only enough for today.  Joyce knew this, yet she made no mention of having $50 in her pocket.  I also need to get a 30-day tag on my van again, because it’s the only vehicle in the house, and it expired two days ago.

I wouldn’t have expected much of it to be applied to the bill, and the tag was kinda iffy, anyway, but no one told me anything.  She’s using it for Christmas shopping for her son.  Oh, I need to mention that said son, my nephew, already has about 30,000 Christmas presents waiting for him.  But "this money was sent especially for his present from so-and-so".  Alright.  Let him open it in the dark, I guess.

Priorities are out of whack.

I just bought, this month, the FIRST EVER gift for Nathaneal in the whole five years I’ve had him.  We’ve always been so busy trying to eek out our survival that we’ve never bought presents for ANY of our kids or grandkids, until now.  ONE present for ONE kid.  He asked for the gift specifically…and he said all he wants for his birthday, in February, is to go fishing.

So yeah, I don’t get poor folks being so stupid about buying presents upon presents upon presents.  It’s a sweet thought and all, but get fucking REAL!

Once again, I let emotion carry me too far too fast.  Joyce had not realized that the electric account had already run down that far.  I told her last week that we had about a week to go.  Apparently, she forgot or didn’t keep up or something.  I do that all the time, but she is one of the people who makes fun of me for not being able to keep up with things, so I figured I didn’t have to remind her over and over.  Lesson learned.

She put a payment on it.  It is enough for a few days, but if we’re careful, we can stretch it a little further.  It doesn’t help to have a wife in menopause, in that regard….damned a/c runs 24/7, even when it’s freezing cold outside.

I must be getting the hormone part of menopause.  She’s got the physical symptoms of it, but I’m the hormonal bitch. lol

Back to Christmas….

I can’t help but wonder if Mama was right about something.  It seems that Sheila, Joyce’s mother, who is deceased, taught Joyce (my stepsister, technically) and our brothers that she raised that love could be measured with dollar signs.  I don’t think she would have done it on purpose, but I know a lot of people who do that.  My Nanny was one of them.  She thought if she gave us enough presents, she could "prove" that she loved us more than anyone else did.  I didn’t need the presents for proof.  In fact, I sometimes gave them back.

I agree. The idea that everyone deserves presents is just a means for retail to continue to exploit the poor.

You have it right. We downsized this year out of necessity, and its wonderfuly freeing. Some of our kids are pissed off we didnt buy for all the grandkids, but do 18 year olds really need an Xmas present form two grandparents hes never seen or only met twice when they were young? Sounds like a family meeting is in order and a plain description of how close you cut it to the bone every month.
