Mary Terror

Ok, am I just weird, or what?  I have just finished a book called Mine for the second time.  That book is about an ex-hippie woman who was a member of a radical group called the Storm Front.  Her name was Mary Terrell, but they nicked her Mary Terror.

Mary Terror is probably one of the most evil, vile creatures on the planet.  She never stopped believing in the credo of the Storm Fronters….basically that all "pigs" were out to quell freedom and they must be stopped, whatever the cost.  The Storm Fronters killed people in violent, torturous ways without a second thought about it, and then they’d laugh and spit on the corpses, even.

Well, this book takes place approximately 20 years after the SF’s were more or less forcibly disbanded.  Mary is leading the life of a fugitive, meaning that she pretends to be a normal person, but we all know she’s not.  The big problem is that she honestly believed in the mindset of the Storm Front.  Apparently, she’s the only one who ever truly did.  The whole story centers around the kidnapping of a child and his mother’s fight to get her son back from the grips of Terror (like the pun?  It’s MINE!!!!  har har).

When Mary finally reaches the former leader of the Storm Front with the child, she faces the death of her dream….and really FAST AND HARD, too.  Jack rejects her.  It is mean, hateful, and ugly rejection, too.

THIS is why I ask if I’m whacked….

When she got rejected and called dumb by Jack, I almost started crying for Mary Terror, the evil stone goddess!!!!!  I almost heard her heart crack into pieces, and it hurt me to witness it, even if I only witnessed by reading.

So am I crazy?  Is it nuts to feel compassion for an evil person?  After all, it is still a person….

Ponder the thought and let me know what you think?

My Mikey, I love you forever times PI cubed plus one,

Your Jack

p.s.  Maybe it’s Barbara’s influence on me.

hmm it’s a tough call. on one hand she was remarkably evil… on the other hand, she did it because she thought she was doing something that needed to be done. Maybe she wasn’t as evil as she was misguided and you feel sympathy because she still feels love just like a normal person would.
