Alicia the First and Edgar Dean

My Mikey, I love you

I’m still in "ramble on and on" mode,  because I just woke up not long ago.  It’s 2:40pm.  We have to stop this going-to-bed-so-damned-late-and-sleeping-all-damned-day thing.

Today is the first day I’ve had much chance to update the diary.  I wanted to tell how the holiday went, and I’ll do my best from memory now.

Christmas Eve began with my sister honking her horn and yelling my name outside my bedroom window.  It was 9:30am, and she woke My Mikey first.  That was NOT good!!!!!

When I finally got  to the door, MH was pleasant, yet slightly cheerleaderish.  She said she’d been calling and calling and calling, but we hadn’t answered!  Duh, sis, it’s called sleeping!  Nobody gets YET that we’re not morning people.

She informed me that we were meeting at Nanny’s at 11:00.  Since it was already past 9 and close to 10, that would never work!

Eventually, around 1 or 2pm, we wound up in Corsicana, at Nanny’s house.  It was fun this year.  Nobody had a lot of gifts, which I was glad about.  After all, we couldn’t GIVE any gifts, so I wouldn’t feel right receiving them, either.

MH was hand-binding lyric books she had made of Christmas carols.  I was poking fun at her, because she was SO serious about the books…I said, "You didn’t make a table of contents?"  Serious as a heart attack, she looked at me and said,  "I didn’t have time."  I  thought I was gonna choke laughing!!!!!  It’s nice to know I’m not the only anally retentive person in the family.

Nanny pulled a little prank on MH, and it was funny.  MH was using yarn to tie the books together (she had punched holes in them with a hole punch, and she was looping yarn through the holes and tying it), so Nanny comes up and grabs the skein of yarn MH is using and starts wrapping it up.  MH looks up and starts reaching to get it from Nanny.  She says, "I need that!" and Nanny pushed the loose end of yarn into the skein.  It was done so mischievously that we all cracked up.  Here our 85-year-old grandmother was being childish, but in a funny way.

We went to the Twilight Home to sing carols.  Memaw was ok….not great, but not terrible, so I was just thankful that she wasn’t terrible.  She knew who I was, though, so I was very happy about that!

We saw Ethel Slater, who reminds us so much of Mum, Alicia the First, my mother-in-law.  Ethel had had a stroke, which left her unable to lift her head.  She seemed to be unimpaired, mentally.  It was apparently ONLY a physical impairment, thank God.  Not that that will be easy for her.  I’m just glad she is still sweet and mild.

We saw Reubene,  Memaw’s former roommate.  She was happy to see us,  and I to see her.  She seemed to be doing well.

We sang for a while, and Alex and Juli misbehaved a little, but I thought it was pretty funny, mostly.  Then again, I’m probably a really bad influence on children!  JuJu and I had a picture taken together…I think it’s our first one!  About time, since she’s six years old now!!!!!

All went well on the Eve.

My Mikey just woke up, and I’m  sure he doesn’t enjoy hearing  the keyboard rattling, so I’ll update again later.

Love to all,

Jack

It sounds like a really nice Christmas for you guys! David and I have been trying to break that staying up late-sleeping in all day cycle, but it’s hard! Once you’re used to it your body just doesn’t want to change. I hope that everything is going well for you and Mikey,David and I miss talking to you two on a regular basis. Lots of hugs, John
