TWO men arrested over a dramatic city siege surrendered to police after a mate pleaded with them by mobile phone to give themselves up.

Heavily-armed police in bulletproof vests swooped on a unit in Mayers St, Manunda, about 3.30pm yesterday after reports a man armed with two axes was threatening residents.

Initial reports suggested the man was also armed with a crossbow, sawn-off rifle and a handgun.

Some residents were evacuated while others were told to remain in their homes as police locked down a nearby school and negotiators arrived.

About 20 officers swooped on the area and locked down Anderson, Hoare, Birch and McCormack streets.

Fearing guns could be involved, police moved people about 100m away as a crowd gathered outside the nearby Raintrees shopping centre.

Minutes before the two men gave themselves up, friends outside the unit spoke to them by mobile phone.

“I said the best thing to do was to come out,” a friend at the scene told The Cairns Post.

Another man, Tom Ferguson, said: “It’s getting to the point that one of these boys is going to get shot.

“They’re surrounded – they should just give themselves up.”

After an hour-long stand-off, police in vests surrounded the unit and drew their guns about 4.25pm as two men walked outside the unit. They were arrested soon after.

A third man, who had fled the unit earlier, was captured minutes later.

One of the brawlers is believed to have walked out of the unit with a battle axe and tomahawk and made threats.

Police were alerted after a nearby female resident phoned 000.

Sen-Sgt Denis Fitzpatrick last night said investigations into the siege were continuing. He would not release details about the weapons found inside the house.

“We’ve detained two persons and now just recently a third person has been detained,” he said.

“There are several weapons that have been exposed here this afternoon and several threats have been made.

“The area was cordoned off because some of the threats did involve firearms.”
