Psalm 18 – God’s love and Victory
I didnt really post the whole of Psalm 18 because I wanted to pick out the parts that really spoke to me. This is more for me than anything but I hope others will be blessed by this as well! Here we go.
The Lord loves us so much so that He will not only fight for us when we’re in trouble but He will do it with much passion and emotion. Some may think God is just some being that lords over us and doesn’t really care or have emotion toward us. There are several scriptures that tells us otherwise but right now Psalm 18 is speaking to me.
3 I called to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.
The very fact that He will answer us when we call on Him shows that He does indeed care for His people.
6 In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.7 The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry.
See… Anger. Thats an emotion right? This scripture says that is someone or something messes with His people He does indeed get angry. I know most parents are quick to spring into action with anger if they hear of anyone bullying or harming either one of their children because they love their children so much and are very protective of them. So you ask well exactly how angry was God?
8 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it.9 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet.
14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning he routed them.
Verses 8 and 9 are kinda scary right? Its not a kind of anger that says "Oh someone is messing with My child, let me fix that." It is a fiery type of anger. One full of love and passion and fierce protection. Also verse 9 shows that He comes down to rescue us. He doesn’t just sit back and take care of it from far away. He springs into action right down in the battlefield with us. Verse 14 shows us that our enemy scatters when He comes down.
16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me.18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the LORD was my support.19 He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.
Because God loves and finds joy in His people He will rescue them. Even when the enemies are way too powerful for you, they are not too powerful for Him and He will be faithful to pull you out of whatever is coming against you. Now you may be thinking in verse 16 "I thought it said God came down earlier so why is he reaching down from on high?" I thought about that and it came to me. We always say God is bigger me or bigger than my enemies. So if He’s big then He should tower over everything right? Even when He’s standing right on the earth He still has to bend down and pick us up like a parent stoops down to pick up a baby.
28 You, LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.29 With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.30 As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.
If you stay in the Lord and always run to Him for refuge He will surround you with light. No darkness will come near you so your enemies cannot easily surprise you. He also gives you strength and preparation to take on anything. No army (troop) coming against you or wall before you will be able to stop you, hold you back, or overtake you.
34 He trains my hands for battle (preparation); my arms can bend a bow of bronze.(strength)<sup class="versenum" id="en-NIV-14154" style="font

He will prepare you for battle giving you strength, protection, support, and a strong foundation to stand on so that you will not become faint and fall.
37 I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed.38 I crushed them so that they could not rise; they fell beneath my feet.39 You armed me with strength for battle;
you humbled my adversaries before me.40 You made my enemies turn their backs in flight, and I destroyed my foes.
46 The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior!47 He is the God who avenges me, who subdues nations under me,48 who saves me from my enemies. You exalted me above my foes;
from a violent man you rescued me.49 Therefore I will praise you, LORD, among the nations; I will sing the praises of your name.50 He gives his king great victories; he
shows unfailing love to his anointed, to David and to his descendants forever.
Great victories for His people! How encouraging is it to know that with Him backing us our enemies will not only be beaten, they will not be able to get back up?! (verse 38) He has unfailing and unconditional love to all those who love and seek Him genuinely from their hearts. Thank you Lord for loving me and continually fighting for me!
