let’s see
Today is Saturday…this I know. After the long week it is so welcome. I wonder if i need to start taking the risk of taking the train again. Let me say this I have no problem with train travel…none at all. Yet since the back, nerve and pelvis thing I am so worried about the walking through the station onto the platform and then the reverse when I get where I am going. Then a taxi to the office or meeting place. The trouble is if I never do it then I will never do it but if i try and get stuck I have a real problem.
The thing with dialling in on a conference call is that people on the end of the phone get forgotten. They get talked over because it means people need to stop and listen and not just talk all the time. It means you miss out on the banter, the flippant comments the brief looks and smiles. Sitting in a room with your phone in front of you and that’s it.
Mind in front of a computer screen when you are the only one from your team is also trying. True there are others around and humerous and fun that they are it is sometimes tricky to understand the work I do. It is not popular because it brings people to account for their non-actions usually. Something that professionals really should be happy about. They should also accept that questioning of their actions is a way of developing good practice and seeing alternative ways of assessing the information. It doesn’t make people wrong, except when they are clearly wrong, just that they need to review and improve. So, as one person says, I have the footsteps of doom. If I am coming to your desk then something has gone wrong, Not always the case it is though part that causes issues for those who almost feel that they are ‘doing a good job’ and that is all that matters. Those days died years, decades even, ago.
Having people understand is difficult at times almost impossible but we need to move forwards. Not everything we do going forward is right; not everything we have done in the past is wrong but what we do need is to review evidence for what is good and include it dispatch the rest to history but also keep reviewing. This applies to all jobs whether it be a leader of a country or the guy who cleans the toilet. Truth is everyone should seek to do the best at whatever they do…but do it with compassion for those around them. The ridiculous comment regarding having to be competitive at stomp on everyone (aka The Apprentice style) brings neither good feelings nor lead to good working environment. And when those same people go down the ladder, more do than stay up the ladder, they will find themselves working with those they dissed. Not good for anyone.
