I’m a Cute Black Girl Pg 59 (Kushrut)
To me ‘Kosher’ was just a label put on food to make it more pricey, because a Rabbi watched how the produce was killed and processed and made sure that it was not tampered with or mixed with milk or foods that were not considered Kosher.
But it turns out it a bit more than that. I mean of course a Rabbi or Appointed person has to be present to watch the process of preparing a food product and it needs to not mix with non approved foods and it has to be done in a clean atmosphere.
and it is so much more than just that.
It is funny how ‘kosher’ is so prominent amongst the Orthodox Jews and in Jewish Communities yet it is only mentioned in the Tanakh twice.
Leviticus 11
1And the Lord spoke to Moses and to Aaron, to say to them: | אוַיְדַבֵּ֧ר יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶל־משֶׁ֥ה וְאֶל־אַֽהֲרֹ֖ן לֵאמֹ֥ר אֲלֵהֶֽם:
2Speak to the children of Israel, saying: These are the creatures that you may eat among all the animals on earth: | בדַּבְּר֛וּ אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר זֹ֤את הַֽחַיָּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּֽאכְל֔וּ מִכָּל־הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ:

4But these you shall not eat among those that bring up the cud and those that have a cloven hoof: the camel, because it brings up its cud, but does not have a [completely] cloven hoof; it is unclean for you.
5And the hyrax, because it brings up its cud, but will not have a [completely] cloven hoof; it is unclean for you; | הוְאֶת־הַשָּׁפָ֗ן כִּי־מַֽעֲלֵ֤ה גֵרָה֙ ה֔וּא וּפַרְסָ֖ה לֹ֣א יַפְרִ֑יס טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם:
6And the hare, because it brings up its cud, but does not have a [completely] cloven hoof; it is unclean for you; | ווְאֶת־הָֽאַרְנֶ֗בֶת כִּֽי־מַֽעֲלַ֤ת גֵּרָה֙ הִ֔וא וּפַרְסָ֖ה לֹ֣א הִפְרִ֑יסָה טְמֵאָ֥ה הִ֖וא לָכֶֽם:

8You shall not eat of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
9Among all [creatures] that are in the water, you may eat these: Any [of the creatures] in the water that has fins and scales, those you may eat, whether [it lives] in the waters, in the seas or in the rivers.

Deuteronomy – Chapter 17
1You shall not sacrifice to the Lord, your God, an ox or a sheep that has in it a blemish or any bad thing, for that is an abomination to the Lord, your God.
Last night the Rabbi discussed the various forms of being Kosher and how it was for us to decide which way we wanted to go. He emphasized how he wanted us to experiment and try being Kosher and then make a decision which was not concrete and something that we would look back on regularly and adjust according to our current situation.
And now I am in a Crosswords.
I never grew up in a Kosher home, but I was surrounded with people who lived a Kosher life, even still to this day. So you would think it would be easy for me to choose to be Kosher. But I am married to a man that loves his Pork. And even though I have never eaten Pork intentionally and when I have eaten Pork accidently I have washed my mouth with salt and hot water and recited the Shema (Okay I did that when I was a child, as an adult I have always been aware of what I was eating and so I like to believe that I have not eaten Pork ever) but I love my shellfish.
As my conversion course is drawing to a close, my Jewish Journey is just beginning and I am going to have to decide how I would like to be Jewish and how I am willing to change my life, making me more Jewish. Just like there are many different streams of Judaism there are many streams of Kosher.
– This is when one just eats whatever they want to eat and whenever they want to eat it.
– Now this is the type of Kosher I have been living. I will eat pretty much what I choose to eat, but I will not eat Pork.
– Eat only what has been stamped with the Beit Din Sticker and been approved and deemed to be Kosher, by the Rabbinic Clergy and those they declare fit to bare the Beit Din Stamp.
– Follow what Hashem instructed to Moses and what was written in the Bible.
– pretty self explanatory. Most Jews are like that. My 1 sister was like that, I have a friend who is like that. I would consider that, but – Christian Husband! And I have a tiny kitchen, it would be very heard to have a and and sections.
I explained to my Rabbi last night, that for my whole life I was pretty much a person who would eat anything except x, y and z…I went on to explain how I have a Christian Husband who loves his Pork, and so I asked him what should I do? I went on to ask if I am expected to be Kosher when I graduate. He explained how he would like it if we all tried to be for a while and then made the necessary changes. But while typing this I have considered of doing Kosher my own style.
I am going to decide that I am going to live as Kosher of a life as I can.
Not sure how long I should wait after eating meat to have a milky food item. But I will try and follow that…no more scrambled eggs with milk…Well I could use Coconut Milk, right? That is better for my stomach as I am Lactose Intolerant. I just realized I am going to have to say goodbye to my fav Pesach Breakfast…
I guess over the next few weeks I am going to be thinking really hard on how I can bring Judaism into my home and how I am going live Kosher.
