Me as a Minister of Education…

Ever sit and take a look around you and think that you could do things better?

I am sure I am one of many South Africans who think this….but I am sure I could have done a much better job at running this country.

Okay I am not going to be naive and think it is an easy job… just imagine going to bed every night worrying about the forever growing and crippling nation you need to lead…

…well if I was in charge is wouldn’t be crippling…

Look at New Zealand…Jacinda Arden is showing the world that women should always lead.

Anyway so if I was the Minister of Education in South Africa what would I do?

Well I would make Education free for primary and high school. I would make tertiary Education a lot more affordable and available to every person that lives in the country.

Of course I would increase the pass mark…cuz right now it is a joke….apparently you just have to pass with about 40% for majority of your subjects… when I was at school it was 48% aggregate (not that much better, but the curriculum was harder)…for me anything below 55% was as good as a fail. So when I look at my matric results and how I got in the 50’s for 3 Higher Grade subjects I am not impressed with myself…but then I got A and B+ for my other 3 higher grade subjects…so that makes me wanna pat my back.

Anyway where was I…yes I would increase the pass rate and the standard of education in general…also I kinda like what they do in the UK of how they offer practical subjects in high school. I mean not all kids are born to be Doctors or Judges. There is nothing wrong in teaching trades in High School and allowing kids to feel good about not being intellectually smart but instead creatively or physically or whatever you would categorize labour intellect.

When I watch The Block and see how proud Australian men are to say they are plumbers or tradees of any sort makes me wonder why South Africans look down on those who work trade jobs….I mean thanks to them many of us are able to switch on a light and flush the toilet without even thinking about it. Can you believe it that in South Africa there are still many places/suburbs where there aren’t any working toilets in houses…people still using the bucket system or having to walk a few km to an actual working toilet? So maybe IĀ  would be the Minister of Hygiene…naa Country development and growth lies in the youth, so I would def work in education…or maybe fix the employment issue in this country.

I just wish I could be Mary Poppins and just kick my walking-stick and fix the issues that bring my homeland down…
