Self torture

Once in a while, an unholy power overcomes me and directs me to the IMDB listings for up-comming films… or movies… I should say, for the year, and I scroll through week after week of forecast releases until my eyes burn out of my head. Almost every single entry serves to further shatter what little faith in North American productions I may have mustered up since the last visit.

My saviour of-course is Chibi-R, whose nose for solid indie films rarely goes astray, and who throughout the year seems to sniff out some real stunners for me, most of which don’t make it to the IMDB site until after their releases.

Not everything that comes out of North America is absolute tripe; some of it is at least mildly entertaining, with one or two films sometimes actually being engaging and clever. The vast majority however is rubbish, and while generally throughout the year most of it passes well beneath my radar, a visit to IMDB always serves to remind me of just how much absolute trash is produced in a single season.

Another reminder too of my foreign-film roots, and I’m thankful yet again of my father raising my brother and I on subtitled European and Asian films.

I make trips to JB Hi-Fi quite often, and while I’m reluctant to spend more than $15 on a Western movie on dvd, I have no problem shelling out $30 or $40 if I have to for movies like “Old Boy” and “It’s a Bitter Sweet Life”. Japanese, Korean and Thai cinema enthrals me, because the stories are so much more imaginative and well written. My family doesn’t get it. I’m rambling again.

You seem like a pretty big Wii/anime fan since I’ve seen you’re name pop up a lot. My love for anime has no limit, other than my FF Addiction. hehe I’m a fan of Playstation (have the PS3) and new Nintendo systems (DS and Wii) but was hoping you know more about a game. Gamestop says Duck Hunt is coming out for Wii, as well as Pilotwings. Both obvious classics, but is that true? -Lyam

Oh, and I definately here you about the people on OD with Anime/Manga as an interest. You ask them their fave shows and they have no idea what they’re talking about. And it sucks when you are trying to find people with similar interests. :/ -lyam

Yeah, sometimes I get a little into doing my notes too. haha. Don’t worry, I’m not a dumb anime fan watching only Adult Swim. I can hold my own with anime convos, sometimes surprising myself over how much I do know. And I did read some stuff but admit to being interested in reading some more stuff. I saw your Nana stuff. Little stuff from the episodes. Do you have overall reviews of anime too?

I went to a comic store where the guy looked it up and it’s for real coming out, Duck Hunt. There’s so many rumors and shit flying around, and I am so pissed cause magazines aren’t telling you ANY of the stuff Nintendo is putting out! It’s all Halo 3 and PS3 not having a good launch. They’ve all became more appealing to the jock gamer and less of the nerdy gamer, y’know? -Lyam

I really shouldn’t read boards about anime/games. There’s always gonna be haters as well as lovers. And can’t expect the rest of the world to see what makes a game great. While some people say buying FFT on PSP or FF6 on DS is a waste of money if you already own them, I am saying praises of thanks to SquareEnix to play those gems on the go. 😀 -Lyam

Yay me! Well I think I’m more picky with movies than youa re actually. I dunno what attracts me to the films I get but they usually turn out great. I shall continue to be on the lookout. If anything to save ourselves from going to Village and watching something crap.
