Lazy thoughts

– Hey.
— Hey what?
– I just had a thought.
— Of what?
– Of… riding in your car.
— Oh?
– Riding in your car, before we were together.
— Oh.
– And listening to the most… amazing music.
— Thank you.
– Don’t take the credit, it’s not like you wrote it.
A sleepy laugh
– Don’t laugh so much, it makes my head bounce.
Another sleepy laugh
A responding laugh
– No really, I sat there thinking – you have the most amazing taste in music.
— Like I said,
– Yes, thank you, I know. Still,
Inhale
– I think that’s when I fell in love with you.
— Really?
– Yeah.
— … That late?
– What do you mean, late – it was early. I fell in love with you first. You just stole my idea.
— Wait a minute, which drive are you talking about, down to the coast?
– No way, ages before then. In the city, that day in the summer when we were back and forth from cafes to houses – you taught me how to use your mp3 player that day.
Pause
— Jesus.
– Yeah.
— Jesus christ.
– Yeah.
Pause
— You fell in love with me that day?
– Yeah. Yes… that’s what I said, didn’t I?
Pause
— Wow.
Pause
– Wait, so this whole time you thought it was the drive down the coast? That was so not-romantic.
— Yeah well, there was no-one in the car that time, I mean, I spent the whole day waiting for you to, you know, spontaneously proclaim your undying love to me…
A laugh
– You did not.
— I did so. I gave you a million chances to take my hand,
– A million…
— A million-kajillion. Woman you so wasted that day.
– I’m sorry – I didn’t know.
Laughter
— It’s a bit late now.
– Don’t bounce my head!
— Sorry.
Pause
Lazy traces of fingers on skin
— So you fell in love with me on that crazy day?
– Hmmm. Yes. I remember, you told me how to use your mp3 player without showing me, just by giving me direct instructions.
— Oh yeah, I remember that.
– I remember thinking – you’re so clear when you speak, efficient but not sparse – almost poetic.
— Poetic? No way – I’ve always thought you were very poetic in your speech, the cadence and intonation with which you verbalise, it’s very musical.
– Are you trying to out-compliment me?
— Maybe. Or maybe we’re just equally fascinated with each-other – keep going with your story.
– Oh you love hearing about yourself don’t you?
— You know I do – come-on, or I’ll laugh some more.
Laughter
– Don’t you dare!
Inhale
– So anyway – we’d just pulled up to, um, that guy’s place,
— Andrew?
– No he was in the back already, down just 5 minutes from that other place we were going for lunch, and we were picking him up.
— Oh Samwich.
– Yeah Sam. That’s who it was, and you’d rolled down your window as he walked down the drive, I was trying to figure out how to pause the mp3 player so you guys could talk – he was just finishing up something and was going to be a minute,
— Mmm.
– And while you were talking through the window, you reached back without looking and put your hand on mine, which had the mp3 player in it, and pressed the pause button.
Pause
— Oh my god, yeah.
– You don’t remember.
— No no, I do, I do – I swear, because I remember how soft your hands felt.
Pause
Head lifting up to make eye-contact
– See? We had a moment of connection there.
— Oh my god – my beautiful woman.
– You sort-of absently left your hand there on the player, over my hand, lingering.
— Like this?
– Just like this.
— Wow.
– And I felt my heart just slowly… kind of lurch, like it was just… miraculously taking on weight, and I fell for you, then and there.
Pause
— You are amazing.
– I know.
— You really are amazing.
A laugh
— So all that time, right through the winter…
– We could have been together.
Inhale
— That almost makes me sad!
Laughter
– No no! Don’t be sad, it’s supposed to be special.
— Mmm, it is special – it’s very special. You’re special.
– Mmm.
— You’re so special, my special, amazing, wonderful girl with a razor-sharp memory.
– Hm hm – thank you.
Pause
— Man I’m so bummed we missed like, almost a whole year.
– Yeah – just think of what I had to do on all of those long, cold nights all by myself…
Laughter
— Ah well, we’ll have none of that…
– Oh… god…
Inhale
– Oh…

Reminds me somewhat of that remixed version of the Poe tune.
