lain

last thursday when i got the perfect collection, i tried to limit myself to only watching the first episode because i had work the next day and an early start.  i ended-up watching the whole first disc.
last night i tried to limit myself to the second disc.  i finished the whole series.
so far, lain is the best anime series i have seen, but then, that’s hardly a surprise given my abstract nature.

i had always said that should i ever have a son, i would name him akira.
if i have a girl, i would name her arisu.

This really is a holy shit moment. I must have already seen Solaris at this point as it was mentioned in 2003. I’m not impressed that I didn’t document the day I first watched Solaris and really took to it, I guess it’s less important than the enduring emotional response I have.

As for Lain, it was the first time I watched a lengthy production and really felt as if it was made in my language, specifically for me. I didn’t think there would be anyone on earth who would create this kind of thing. From Lain, Yoshitoshi ABe went from strength to strength and eventually hit us with Haibane Renmei and Texhnolyze. For me, Texhnolyze edges Lain out; in retrospect Lain actually explains a whole lot and while the visual presentation remains amazing, it becomes a little less abstract once all the exposition is revealed. Nothing wrong with that, but on my way to much more abstract territory, Lain becomes more of a stepping stone towards the lofty heights of the absolutely abstract realm.
