Kita e – Diamond Dust Drops | complete
Yet another wonderfully warm series. It’s so amazing that at the same time that I’ve begun to treasure everyday things I’ve come across so many anime that focus on that very theme.
Kita e focusses on six main characters who each encounter love in varying ways. It isn’t a complicated production, nor is it heavily stylised. While some of the women’s stories are more mature than others, the simpler ones still are heart-warming to watch. While on the shounen front I get tired of watching the same two-dimensional shy male battling with his feelings of shyness or total ignorance of scores of girls who throw themselves at his feet – and let’s not forget the annoying best friend (see I”s Pure and about a million other productions), I never ever tire of the shoujo themes of experiencing everyday life and loving those around you, seeing beauty and joy in the simplest of things. I really loved the atmosphere of Kita e, and the settings really helped it along: though there were high-school age characters, there was little time spent in school, no hot-springs, no dormitories and no mansions. The settings felt much more like everyday locations, and the characters like everyday people, and together they combined well to form a believable atmosphere and environment for the stories to take place. As simple as the stories are, the emotions of the characters really do shine, and though there are fewer subtler sub-texts than the abstracts, there is still a little more meaning to this anime than just the main narrative. Like Aria and a few others, it’s simply about living life and loving, and I very much enjoyed it.
Only 13 eps long and now it’s done – what am I going to watch next?
