haibane renmei
(japanese with english subtitles only)
this weekend past i shared haibane renmei with Laura.
it’s been some time since i saw it last, the last viewing being under trying circumstances. this time i felt even more emotional – sharing it with Laura has amplified the experience. when i completed texhnolyze a few months ago, i wondered if it was an equal work to haibane renmei, but as great as texhnolyze is, it doesn’t come close. there is no series, film, book, still image or game i have experienced as yet that even comes close to what haibane renmei is.
in reality, there isn’t really a reference between two different works of art, each being built on entirely different elements – so there really is no comparison between haibane renmei and ghost in the shell (the film) or jin-roh.
however it must be said now.
haibane renmei is the greatest work of art to ever have been created, that i have experienced in my life thus far.

I really am itching to erase all traces of Laura from my diary, but alas, it must remain. Such things are a part of your life – I maintain that I have no regrets – that one’s easy; and certainly I’m not angry about it any more. Nevertheless I don’t like reading about her. In some ways though it’s good to be reminded of a few things; what’s that lyric from Fluke? Something about scars? Better to pick them now and again.
This piece really is about Haibane Renmei – and if I could do it all over again, one thing I’d change is sharing it with everyone. I would have loved to have kept this little nugget to myself and shared it with someone to whom it really would mean something. In the long-term. You know, in the ‘you and me forever’ kind of way, which naturally doesn’t exist for me.
Try RahXephon. It’s not the best, but I think you’d like it. It has interesting story lines, good animation, and decent music.

I don’t think anything much can top Haibane Renmei. Personally NieA_7 still tops it for me, but I do have to give HR a second viewing at least. Isn’t it funny a lot of people find HR boring. Fools! The lot of them! Interesting comment above.
