False assumptions or simply being a dumbass
I was thinking earlier today about my 1 year anniversary of me quitting smoking and about the events that occured during my hospital stay that brought about me quitting my habit.
Last year I was admitted into a hospital for a severe kidney infection. Naturally they ran all kinds of test and determined I also had infectious pneumonia, chronic bronchitis along with COPD. Ok, I was a smoker and I had the all to common smokers cough so that also meant I had all these other probs too. Dumbass’ lol. During the course of testing my blood was also tested numerous times and their was an abnormality, I had a blood infection and this is where the story begins.
The doctor that was my primary care doctor for my stay was also an infectious disease specialist. When I first met him I noticed he was acting strangely everytime he came by. He would always look to make sure no one was close to him and he would only whisper when he talked to me. Even tho I found it weird I didn’t really think anything of it until the end of my fourth day. I was asked to sign a form giving permission for blood work so I could be tested for AIDS. I was shocked and instantly pissed off and without even thinking I said a few choice words and told there where they could go and even gave detailed instructions on how to get there. There were only 2 ways that I would have possibly been exposed to the virus and that was thru tattoos or by work that I had done in that same hospitals OR repairing their floors.
It had been said I was well enough to go home and the doctor was going to release me until I refused an AIDS test. On my 6th day there, my doctors associate made the rounds and he filled me in as to why the doctor wanted the test done. My doctor was Korean and he wasn’t used to seeing a guy wearing an earring so he "assumed" that I was gay hence the reason for the test even tho all previous bloodwork never suggested that the virus might be present. I was in shock again but now I knew the reasons for the weird looks and behavior . He apologized for the other doctors behavior and said he had just found out that morn why the other doctor acted like he did. I assured him I wasn’t gay and told him the only way possible for me to come into contact with the disease and authorized the test to be done. I was release 2 days later after the test came back negagtive, naturally.
Although this posting is on the long winded side, it goes to show you in detail the assumptions people make just because of a persons appearance. I have been called a devil worshipper because of my tats, earring, and the music I listen to. When I went to purchase my laptop the other year, the "kid" working in the computer department ignored me because I had just got off work and so naturally I wasn’t exactly clean when I went to the store.
It just goes to show you just how much of a dumbass people can be when they make assumptions about someone based on appearance, the music they listen to, the vehicle they drive or even the job they might have. The bottom line is this, before you judge or draw conclussions about someone, know the facts first because if not you could find yourself in a world of trouble or worst yet, you could miss out on knowing someone that could help change you and your life for the better.
Unfortunately stereotypes are part of our culture. I tend to embrace the differences in people.
